Need to replace my car. Looking for an SUV with optional 3rd row

Get AWD - I would never buy a car/suv without one. You really need to test drive them and see what you like. Its great for snow, ice and rain.

AWD or 4WD is fine for this area. AWD works by itself and the torque is different. 4WD you turn on and off yourself and it has more torque/power.

OP here. Thank you for bringing this up. In the back of my mind I know the difference, but I really wasn't thinking about it. I would prefer the 4wd where I have control over when it goes on.

The 3rd rows in most SUVs of comparable size to a minivan are much, much smaller. Anyone you transport will want to kill you.

If you want a Suv that drives like a truck (a good thing, from my perspective) and has a third row seat that can seat two adults, you should check out the Land Rover LR4.
