My parents have been here since the 60s---when the race riots were happening and city streets were burning.

Part of the reason I grew up in the Fairfax suburbs was because my parents, like many, many others, fled the crime.

There were entire areas of DC we avoided...and times my dad did take us to events with caution or a visiting relative would get lost in a very rough area, etc... We all remarked in the last decade how we now are going out to places and events that nobody would have dreamed of going to in the 70s, etc.

I was thinking the same thing, OP. WTH is happening???? We are just over the DC line in VA and there has definitely been in uptick in crime--assaults, robberies, etc. over here as well.

We need a Guiliani. He cleaned NYC up. Alas, DC never seems to have much success with mayoral candidates...colorful, yes..effective, nah.

I live in the burbs so I have no skin in this game, but I used to work for the city and know a bit about District politics. I also believe that if DC is doing well the whole region benefits, so the recent crime spike makes me very sad. I'm really surprised that there haven't been more calls for Lanier to step down or for changing tactics. She's pretty well liked by the council members, though, so that may be it. It's pretty rare that a Fenty appointee would hang on that long. Bowser is taking a lot of heat on this issue, but I'm sure she has no idea of who could replace Lanier.

What we DON'T need is putting more folks in prison.

Look, we don't help justice-involved individuals by simply locking them up. That doesn't help anyone.

There are too many people in prison already - which is why we need criminal justice reform to help get them out and back in the community.

But that's not enough - we also need to HELP them with re-entry programs and - if they need it - more treatment beds for mental issues / substance abuse issues.

Its time to step up and help the real victims here.

DC has quite a way to go before it gets back to where things were in the early 90's. One positive sign is that in the most recent election, concern about crime seems to have been one factor in several incumbents losing their Council seats. One hopes Mayor Bowser will get the message.

I agree that we don't need more trash in prisons. If we would just execute criminals, there would be less crime.

most likely she has incriminating evidence on them like she had on Fenty. That is after all how she got the job originally. It doesn't help that the officers who can leave leave immediately.
