Why is Cleveland Park fully plowed and Ward 1 streets still covered in snow?

Anonymous
I live in Cleveland Park. While a number of the streets are plowed (a few inexplicably overplowed for the amount of traffic they carry), other streets are basically still untouched. I noticed that a few people own (or hired someone with) a snowblower, but most of us neighbors have cleared the sidewalks and our cars out the old fashioned way -- with shovels and brooms,

Um, I live in N. Cleveland Park and our street hasn't been touched. The only plowed streets are commuter roads and school roads, and even most of those are just one lane.

Nice pot stirring though!

So if they're sidewalks are dusted to perfection, it's probably because those business and property owners paid out of pocket to have that done. I don't think the city does that.

Am I wrong? And DC residents? I'm curious because I work in DC, and I was wondering what to expect as far as sidewalks are concerned. I figured it would be a mixed bag because it is up to property owners.

What the city can do is fine heavily property owners that don't clear their sidewalks. But I can't see how that would logistically happen immediately after a storm (i.e., I can't imagine the city sending out code people to issue citations on the Monday after a blizzard).

In our Ward 3 neighborhood (not Clev. Park) we had to pay private contractors to clean the back alleys and secondary streets yesterday. OP might consider mobilizing neighbors and paying contractors rather than bitching about Cleveland Park

I don't think there is much racial difference between Mount Pleasant and Cleveland Park.

My point is essential workers need to be able to get their vehicles out and it seems, the city has not touched the side streets in most wards yet, except Ward 3 .

I think that disparity deserves public scrutiny

There actually is a big difference. Cleveland Park is lily white. Mt Pleasant has a lot of Hispanics, some old school black people that have lived here for ages.

I live in Mt Pleasant. And the plowing has been pitiful. My street has not been touched.

Nadeau must not have much influence in the Bowser bureaucracy. And before her, Jim Graham had a different notion in mind about what "getting plowed" means. :)

I live in Georgetown and our street never gets plowed. It's hazardous to even walk.

DC seldom, if ever, clears the alleys anywhere - which can be a problem is that's where your trash and recycling is collected.

What street do you live on, PP ?

Here is what I saw las night in Cleveland Park:

Macomb st hill is plowed and salted to the bone as is Reno/ 34th, Porter, Newark, Ordway, 35th st AND all of their sidewalks cleared by a snow blower

I assume you have to refer to your neighborhood as " North Cleveland Park" for a reason

Some streets around Cathedral Heights are almost broom clean. DC might have an understanding with the Cathedral Commons to clear nearby streets.

I can see Reno/34th and Macomb being priorities, but it's not like Newark, 35th or Ordway are major streets at all.

DC doesn't clear sidewalks, and they certainly don't use snowblowers. That must be adjacent property owners.

Or Cathederal Commons understands how smart it is for business

I'm not " bitching about CP" , PP, I do however bet that if your child or parent or husband needed emergency medical care, you'd want to be able to go to a hospital that was stafffed with enough nurses and doctors to care for them and those nurses live in neighborhoods of DC that have not been plowed. Many of them might work in FFX and can't walk to work or take a bus.

Similarly, I assume you want your ward police station fully staffed. Have you considered that the cops who patrol your neighborhood , don't live there and need the streets to be cleared so that they can get to work.

IF CP residents can afford to hire contractors, good for them, but they should not have to. The city should be doing it, but on a priority basis , based on , wait for it, where essential workers live, not where teh political influence lives.

I doubt that a lobbyist in CP is going to be able to cardiovert you husband if he has an MI.

Not a fan of pitting neighborhood against neighborhood.

Live in Mt Pleasant. Watch that animation - not a STREET in MtP has seen a plow. Not one. We are socked in.

Weird. I live WOTP and my "local" street has had about 15 passes of the plow. They're also marked on that map on the DC gov website. You should call your council member.

I'll bet they're not the ones paying for the DC snowplows!

Actually , we have been emailing the Director of DDOT after calling 311 for 2 days and getting a recording.

No response from Director Dormsjo.
