removing upper lip hair

I've tried threading only twice, but each time it hurt something awful. After the second time, I vowed to stick with waxing which I can tolerate better.

Sally Henson cold wax strips work like a charm. It only hurts for a second and might turn your skin slightly pink, but it goes back to normal in under 10 minutes, especially if you use the oil that comes with it. Hair grows back lighter in color and texture.

if your hair is fine, I would just bleach it and leave it at that. Wax/thread both hurt too much for me.

Definitely electrolysis!! It can seem expensive, but it is permanent! I just don't understand why anyone would wax their upper lip, just to have to do it over and over forever, when you can get rid of the hair permanently.

You're talking about a very small area, so you should get quick results & you may need only a few treatments. You can get a prescription for Emla (numbing cream) so the treatment doesn't hurt. You may have some redness for a few hours afterward but it goes away quickly. You should not experience scabbing, crusting, etc. - if you do, find another technician. If you find a good electrologist you should have almost no regrowth of properly treated hairs.

I'm "blessed" with fair skin & dark Mediterranean hair everywhere. I've done electrolysis on my chin & lip, stomach (linea negra) and bikini area and the results are awesome, esp. my bikini area, which was a mess to shave & always looked stubbly & gross and now has been hair free for 10 yrs!

Now I'm doing underarm & legs with laser and having good results so far, but not as great as with electrolysis. But legs (IMO) are too large of an area to do electrolysis - I just don't have the time to have every individual hair treated so I opted for laser and am pleased so far.

Where do you do electrolysis? Any recommendations in Bethesda or NW DC?

Another poster with light skin, dark hair. Laser hair removal is amazing. I am so happy with the results.

I do know people who have had regrowth after electrolysis-hormones can change and make hair grow.

If your hormones change, it's not really regrowth, it's new growth, and it will happen regardless of whether you do electrolysis, laser, or waxing. So, yes, if you do electrolysis or laser, you could wind up with hair again later on, but it doesn't mean the treatments were not effective, it means your body is producing new hairs.

To the poster who asked for recs in Bethesda for electrolysis, I went years ago to a place in the Air Rights Building that was really good, I think it was called Hair-Free Electrolysis. Haven't been there in many years and no longer live in Bethesda, so I can't recommend a technician but I was very happy with them - I had work done on chin/upper lip, and she did a great job on my bikini line.

About how much does electrolysis cost? And about how much (an area, or number of hairs) do they do in one session? Trying to get a rough sense of what facial electrolysis would entail. Thanks!

If the person is using wax at the right temperature (not too hot and not too cold), you should have limited reaction. I've found that problems happen only when the wax is too hot or if the person doesn't do it right the first time and has to re-wax a previously waxed area (skin is very sensitive then).

When I home, I immediately wash my wash with gentle cleanser and then I apply a good quality face lotion. That controls the redness and irritation a lot.

OP, if you are waxing for the first time, take the time to find a good place that is hygenic - that is, they do not re-use wax strips, they use a different dipping stick in the wax for each customer, etc.

This is somewhat off topic but here goes. Many teenage girls at DD's school do nothing about stash hair and exposed lower hair in swim suits. Another trend is to not shower daily and to wash hair about twice a week.

I also recommend laser hair removal. Pale skin and dark hair is ideal with excellent results in minimal time. Pays for itself in a short time. The best part is that the machine zaps an area and does not go after pulling out each hair. They can also give you a numbing cream to make it more comfortable.

It depends on where you go, who works on you etc but something like $30-$45 for 15-20 minutes, or about 100-125 hairs. There can be a lot of hair on the upper lip area.
