What are your "look fors"?

Teacher turnover and your overall feeling when you walk in. Is it clean? Does it seem chaotic other than the usually organized chaos of preschool for the older kids? Your needs and prioritities will change as your child becomes older. Go with whatever place you feel is right for now and is convenient. It's okay if you need to switch in 2 years as you know more.

I asked this of someone I know who did special ed services in many daycares, and she said the only thing that REALLY matters is the emotional responsiveness of the caregivers. Are they attentive and engaged? How's their energy? How do they greet children in the morning? To do this, you do have to spend some time in the classroom(s) and talk to the director (who in the case of our center sets the tone for a warm, loving center). I truly think this in combination with turnover (you don't want that great teacher to leave!) is what you should focus on. Everything else is gravy.
