Disgusting behavior by City of Falls Church leaders

Anonymous
I don't think that was a summary so much as a presentation of one side's biased view, 10:03. So, do you feel good voting for Duncan who supported the convicted child molester and urged his return to the community?

What do other assaults have to do with this? Did any leaders write in support of the criminal in those cases? I asked a similar question above but got no answer. Are you just trying to prove that such assaults are common in Falls Church City? I really don't get the point. And I don't understand the support for Duncan and other leaders who supported this heinous man.

I also don't understand -- are you accusing Foust of accepting bribes?? Many Fairfax residents are opposed to expansion of Mt. Daniel because it is in a residential area of Fairfax County.

You seem to engage in a lot of mudslinging.

There are three seats available on the Falls Church City Council, and three seats on the school board. Sam Mabry and Johanna Barry (council candidates), along with Mark Kaye, Alison Kutchma and Becky Smerdon (school board candidates) are the FACTS coalition (Fairness, Accountability, and some other buzzwords.) They do not support any new growth (smart or otherwise), families who live in apartments/condos, replacing our leaking, crowded 50+ year old high school, or finding a solution to our elementary crowding other than stopping people from moving in. They are being helped by Ira Kaylin, former council member and a regular donor this summer ($550 or more) to John Faust, the Fairfax planning supervisor who is blocking the Mount Daniel renovation.

As part of their attack strategy, this group has suspiciously timed the release of letters written in 2012 on behalf of Michael Gardener, who was ultimately convicted of molesting several young girls in the community. Many of the letter writers were found to be city leaders (ugh), one of whom, Phil Duncan, is up for re-election to Council.

Still with me? This is where things really go off the rails:

Not content with merely calling out Phil on his choices, the FACTS crew piled on. They captured the FCCPS parents email list and are using that to spam every family in the city with screeds somehow linking Phil to council candidate Letty Hardi and school board candidate Erin Gill, both of whom favor smart, thoughtful growth as a way to fund city services and schools. (The logic behind the most recent attacks is fuzzy -- either they're taking too much money from developers or they're taking too much money from small donations. It changes by the day.) FACTS are also behind the "We Support the Girls" signs, which are apparently only about Gardener's young victims and not about other girls who were attacked by another teenager last year.

School board candidates Jake Radcliff, Justin Castillo and Kieran Sharpe are keeping their heads down. As is council candidate Dave Tartar.

So basically Tuesday's election is about whether to endorse these dirty politics and people who have promised to stop any potential for revenue, or to choose candidates who have focused on the issues and have expressed concrete ideas on how to get where we need to go.

This is far from a summary. You forget the murder plot allegations, the superintendent ignoring the request to take the sub teacher out of the girls schedule, the poor Gardner kids, etc etc.

According to the letter the parent wrote, the sub who they wanted removed was not in the victims class, was in the class of a sister of a victim. And she didn't ignore the request, as per the parent.

And after reading that letter, I don't necessarily agree with the superintendent's decision not to alert all parents of the threat. the parent obviously disagrees but it's a valid call (either one wouldn't have been valid). If you are looking to take down Toni Jones, then of course you can rack up all sorts of"mistakes". But it's very one sided.

Ira Kaylin is a FCC resident and editor of the FCPost. Why is an FCC resident giving $500 to a Fairfax County Board of Supervisors candidate right before the Mt Daniel expansion hearing in front of the Fairfax County Planning Commission???

Check the latest reportings -- Kaylin's contributions to Foust are up to $650 now. Last contribution was early October.

No, I am not part of that. I am OP and the one who didn't like the summary posted. I am just an uninvolved citizen who heard the news and is reacting to it. I find it so weird that you guys have such a conspiracy theory going that you cannot understand how disgusting the behavior of these prominent citizens was. It just scares me more about the City and its inhabitants.

You honestly feel fine voting for Duncan?? I've asked this and it hasn't been answered.

Why do you bring up other assaults? I've asked if they, too, involved letters in support of the perpetrator but that hasn't been answered.

Why are our focusing on timing of news releases ( and ignoring the gag order upon the parties), criticizing people who brought these letters to light, accusing Foust of accepting bribes ... INSTEAD of standing up against reprehensible behavior by your leaders?? By the way, my FFX county was approached by a City candidate for a contribution because they are friends. Do you want me to assume that that candidate was trying to bribe her?

I truly am not part of either side on this. Just a human being who cannot believe what is going on in her area.

How do you know both aren't happening (standing up against reprehensible behavior AND understanding it was a political attack)? We are all disgusted by the pedophile. If you look at the GoFundMe for the signs, there are many people who donated who are not affiliated with the FC Post/FACTs team. It's not a litmus test though.

If you are disgusted with the letters - but also disgusted with the thought of Mabry/Barry on the council - then a decision must be made. What's the priority for you? I'm not sure yet. I know I wouldn't vote for Mabry/Barry, but I may just vote for Hardi/Tarter and leave it at just 2 instead of 3. I'm not sure yet.

The fact the timing was likely orchestrated by those who are trying to swing an election - yeah, it's a bit off-putting - I can't vote for them to reward that sort of behavior (but more importantly I don't agree with their vision for the city). I read somewhere about a similar "October Surprise" Mabry orchestrated the last time he ran for council (scaring people - lying - about their electric bills, using robocalls). So yeah, his character is an issue for me too.

wait, what?

"Their letters did not challenge the verdict but did seek a lesser rather than greater prison term for Gardner. "

Is it now disgusting to ever think a shorter prison term makes sense in a situation like this?

Anonymous wrote:It's a horrible situation all around. But one of worst parts is that certain candidates in our election are using these poor girls as part of their own twisted campaign strategy. Apparently, "Support the Girls" only means those victims aligned with Sam Mabry and Johannah Barry -- the little girl attacked at Cherry Hill park and the kindergartener at St. James are apparently worthy of being ignored, because they haven't factored into this group's concern at all.

This statement is incorrect. The families of the girls have stated very clearly that they feel (and there's plenty of evidence to support) people in positions of FCC power were putting their influential eggs in the basket the politically connected pedophile, to help him appear better than he was. RATHER than supporting and helping the victims and potential future victims, they chose to extol the virtues of a man who was a political leader, married to the former mayer and current councilmember, molested 10 year old girls and his niece, and had apparently made moves to find out about hiring a hit man (JEEZUS). All this was known and knowable to the letter writers before they wrote their letters. This suggests that people may indeed have gotten much too cozy in their political offices. Now they've been outed. And the families of the victims themselves have articulated very well what happened and what is going on, but only were allowed to do so after the gag order was lifted from them. And they did so quickly so that voters knew what was going on. Not surprisingly, they have VERY STRONG opinions about who is running and who should NOT be voted in.

The editor of the FCNP himself writes articles in favor of establishment politics in FCC, and wouldn't you know, he's also politically connected to establishment officeholders and is himself one of the pedophile-supporting letter writers. He and his newspaper are not objective news sources. He writes with a point of view and positions his pieces in such a way that people he attacks or makes insinuations about have to come out to defend themselves. Do you remember that line from the Sandra Bullock movie? Something like: "I know he/she didn't do it. I just want to hear him deny it." That's what the FCNP is doing -- articulating or insinuating untruths and then putting good people in positions of having to provide evidence and proof the newspaper is wrong. This is intentional and purposeful nasty journalism.

People in power (and those who support them) are afraid that they will be ousted. They do not want to appear ruffled and riled up, and they want to appear to rise above nasty politics. In fact, the FCNP paper is doing the nasty campaigning for them by authoring slanted, non-researched articles on city and school board incidents, issues, and candidates. And, in addition, some in power are using quiet channels of authority (e.g., re-writing policies, mis-interpreting policies) to get their own twisted little politics done. It is very underhanded and under the radar. People are trying to bring it to radar level, and it is very difficult to do. The parents of the victims themselves are among these people trying to air out what is actually very dirty laundry, and some are very wrongfully accusing them of underhandedness. You can see how twisted this is.

There are very good people with new to the political sphere who want to hold local leadership accountable at all levels -- moral, ethical, political, and procedural. Look for them.

Phil Duncan is the only candidate who wrote a letter of support, no? Although I believe he's done a good job as a council member, I can't bring myself to vote for him. The letter was an outrageous move on his part. However, at this point, the Falls Church FACTS people are being politically opportunistic by attempting to tar pretty much every cantidate not within their slate with the same brush as Duncan, just because they have similar political views. It's hateful and dishonest.
