Yep, this. It's fine to deny DC residents representation. But they shouldn't then have to pay federal taxes. |
| Plus, many of the reasons for doing it before just don't exist. Back then - it was a huge deal where the capital would be as that part of a developing nation would have such an advantage. This was to prevent that advantage. Given that DC now really includes the Maryland and Virginia suburbs - that argument really doesn't hold any water. And I don't care quite so much about representation (though I do care!) as I do about the capricious way the ruling party of congress can suppress and circumvent the wishes of the people. That is so not what was intended! |
Do you agree with every single law affecting your city and state? If not, why haven't you moved? |

DC's lack of representation in Congress is contrary to American values. There is no rational policy argument for it in today's world. The idiots above are trolling or have never really thought about it.

| How about, we don't pay federal taxes? Sound good? |
| Loved the bit. Don't get why OP is making a big deal out of John Oliver being a "Non-American." As if no Americans had ever organized around this. I remember when a bunch of our council members commuted civil disobedience over this. And my favorite campaign was the one to get DC accepted into the Winter Olympics just like Puerto Rico. I think they proposed having a curling team. That was awesome. |

It's all the Republicans fault? Really? I seem to recall President Obama enjoying D majorities in BOTH houses early on; why didn't he give you statehood? Blame him if you want to play the blame game. |
