Well maybe there are two options.
1.) You could ask to skip the screening test and go straight for the 3 hour test after you come back. Its a PIA and your insurance may not cover the 3 hour test without first meeting the threshold on the screening test. 2.) Take the screening test early and ask for the specific results. This is a screening tests and doctors set the "failure" threshold at the amount where statistical probablity kicks in. Some doctors follow a lower threhold than others to move on to the 3 hr test. If you fail by only a few points, follow a low sugar diet for a few weeks and take the 3 hr when you get back. If you fail and blow off the charts, call your doctor and discuss options. GD is different than Type I or Type II diabetes. 'Normal' diabetes is triggered by loss of pancreatic functions leading to insulin resistance. In pregnancy, the hormones created can also lead to insulin resistance. If your pancrease is already 'challenged' by a predisposition to Type II, high consumption of sugar, overweight etc then you are in a state where you are more likely to be affected by these hormones if they are also triggering insulin resistance. You can still have none of these conditions, be perfectly healthy and the hormone affect on your body can trigger a diabetic state, that is why with GD after pregnancy the woman can return to a non diabetic state. |
