| Ha! I also got the what's happening to my body books. I remember liking them. We got both even though I only have sisters...I do r think the cup is too advanced. I wished is started using one from the start... |
| It sounds like you have prepared her well so she knows so now it's just the wait until she starts. Why not take her and get her to choose a selection of pads/liners and tampons oh and some wipes and why not treat her to some new bras and undies. If she don't want the products kept in the bathroom with yours she can always keep them in her underwear draw. The most important thing is for her to feel that it's normal for her to be needing these items now. |
| Any recommendations for a first tampon? I've used the non-applicator type for decades so don't know how applicators have evolved. |
| Also, for those who switched early to tampons, were you good about changing them regularly? I worry about DD leaving one in all day. |
| Hi I too got the what's happening to me book, some training bras and a selection of period products for my ninth birthday from my older sister, so embarrising opening these in front of my family. |
| Always do some slim applicator tampons. When dd started using them I got her to start on the friday after school so I had the whole weekend to remind her when it was time to change it. |
For the first time I would go brand name. Tampax is really nice!! |

My mom didn't really speak with me about it at all, but when I was in 5th grade in the mid-80s, the school nurse came in to talk with the girls about puberty. The boys had their own separate talk. We got a "starter kit" from J&J Personal Products that included various types of Stayfree pads and a little book called "Growing Up and Liking It" that explained everything. I can't remember if tampons were included or not.
My daughter isn't quite of the age yet, but I do plan to speak with her very openly and provide all the supplies she will need. I'd suggest buying a variety of products (different brands and sizes) so she can see which ones she likes best. There are teen-sized liners, pads, and tampons that she can experiment with. I'd mention the menstrual cup as an option, but pads and/or tampons will be easier and more comfortable for a "newbie." Also be sure to reinforce the importance of proper hygiene including front to back wiping, and proper disposal of pads and tampons. |
The Tampax Pearl Lite is a good starter tampon. Once she gets to know her flow, she can decide if she needs something more absorbent. I know TSS is not as big an issue now as it was years ago, but it's still important to talk about it - I think the tampon box inserts still have information on it. |
| My 12 yr old vey much does NOT want to use a Diva Cup. I figure she can start with tampons, I'll tell her to change it every four hours, and then talk to her about using the Diva Cup the summer before college. |
Fun fact: "Growing Up and Liking It" has been around since the 1950s. In the 70s, Judy Blume was asked to write an updated version of it. Turns out that her version was the one I read in the mid-80s! Between that and "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret" I can say that Judy Blume helped me navigate getting my first period! |

DD is 13 and still hasn't gotten hers, so this is a timely post for me.
Re: tampons. I just want to say that my mom told me you just stick it in, so I did, and it hurt like hell. Turns out that the little extra step of "take out the cardboard applicator after you stick it in" was something my apparently thick brain needed. Once I knew to take out the applicator, it didn't hurt. I was a straight A student, so it wasn't that I was dumb. Just didn't know these things and didn't want to talk to anyone about them. So make sure your DD knows abuot taking the applicator out when she puts in the tampon. |
I wouldn't start with cardboard. I still hate cardboard applicators. |
| Whether it's cardboard or plastic, it's still going to hurt if the applicator is left in. Make sure your DD knows to take it out. |
| It's kind of like making sure you stick the pad to your underwear instead of sticking it onto your body lol. You only do it the once, it was very painful and patches of pubes missing lol. |
