Moving to DC

PP - I checked out the places you listed from the MLS in Arlington. The first looks like a good deal and is in a fairly good neighborhood. The second house's price is SO low, I would wonder what shape it is in and where exactly it is located. It is in South Arlington in an "up and coming neighborhood" which to me means sort of iffy. There are townhouses to be found in the $400s in Arlington. We moved from a townhouse in N. Arlington (Maywood) last year and our 2 br 2 1/2 bath sold for $400,000. Other units have sold in the complex recently for a little more - $429,000. So it can be done, but a SFH in either N or S Arlington for under $500,000 would be tough.

Have you tried contacting some RE agents?

I'm the poster who posted the MLS #s.

The second one in Arlington is near Marymount (I found the address). Is that a decent area? I think my husband works near there near the Ballston Mall, but you know how areas all run into each other that are good or bad.

I'm actually very interested in this post partly because he works there and I want to see where the good neighborhoods are that are more affordable for the future (we don't plan to move for a while).

Also, ever since we bought our first place I've been stalking the market. That's why I got the MLS #s. I look up houses all the time anyway. Just doing it for fun!

Oh yeah....and it's listed as having to pull up the carpets (fixer-upper?) and it's right on Glebe Rd. Ugh.

I checked the listing in Arlington and neither is near Marymount. The second is on S. Glebe, very busy road. Marymount is on N. Glebe in a very nice neighborhood in N. Arlington, but still, a busy road.

Yeah, the second one was zip code 22202 which is S. Arlington, not near Marymount. Even though I haven't seen it, I would not recommend that house, just because the price is so cheap. There are nice neighborhoods in both N. and S. Arlington, but a decent house (even somewhat of a fixer-upper) on a quiet street would be at least $500,000. If you want to search by zip code, houses in S. Arlington all have zips that end in even #s (22202, 22204, 22206) and houses in N. Arlington (Ballston, Marymount), all end in odd #s (22201, 22203, 22205, 22207, 22209). In general, 22207 (near Marymount) is the most expensive zip code, but there are certainly places of all price ranges in all locations. We bought a house in 22207 last year for under $600,000.

If your husband is working in Ballston he could easily commute from Falls Church or Mclean. We live in Mclean but do just about everything in Arlington and take back-roads to get there. There are listings in your price range but some may be fixer-uppers. Also check Vienna which alot of people rave about.
