A bit much for some 12 year olds, no?

No. I was going to recommend that and Stand By Me.

I prefer to link reading and books, so I don't care how gory something is (Last of the Mohicans comes to mind), if the kids read it, we'll watch and discuss the differences. Not many movies unless the kids read it first though.

Murder and prison rape? Shawshank is not appropriate for a middle school kid.

Jurassic World if he liked the 2 books, which are very good and more scientific-minded than the movies, and if he liked the first movie. Number two and three are complete crap.

The Hobbit movie, if he liked the book, although of course it encompasses a great deal more story than the book and the orcs are quite gruesome.

Indiana Jones.

Good one!

The entire Lord of the Rings triology is great for a boy of that age.

Good Burger with Kenan Thompson (SLT member) and other known stars. It is a hoot. I'm watch it any time I have a bad day and need some side cracking laughs.

Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (actually better movie)
Indian in the Cupboard
Bridge to Terabithia* spoiler alert both book and movie are tear jerkers and deal with a child's death
A Princess Bride
Matilda
Holes
Zathura
Peter Pan (the one with Jeremy Sumpter)
The Hobbit (the animated 70s version)

Not a book (that I know of)...
Lucas
Newsies
a Hayao Miyazaki film...stunning

These are some of the book/movie combinations that the kids and I have done. Some were read by just the teens, some but just the elementary crowd, a few were one of the nightly chapter books. We only do this with chapter books, as there are way too many picture books that would take the kids 20 minutes or less to read, and then the kids would want to watch 1.5 hours of movie... No way, that defeats the purpose.

Black Cauldron
Wizard of Oz
Narnia series (I'm hoping that they're just taking a break and are going to do the others... BBC versions work too)
Harry Potter series
LOTR series
Hunger Games series
City of Ember
Great Gatsby
Jungle Book (for a 12 yo I would do the live action version)
first two Percy Jackson
Giver
Monuments' Men
Ender's Game
most Roald Dahl
Alice in Wonderland
Seabiscuit
Snow Falling on Cedars
Shiloh
Where the Red Fern Grows
Doctor Dolittle (the original film is much better!)
How to Eat Fried Worms
Coraline
Series of Unfortunate Events (1 movie)
Secret Garden
Three Musketeers, Man in the Iron Mask, Count of Monte Cristo
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Frankenstein
Dracula
any Shakespeare
Sounder
Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn
Black Stallion
any Austen
any Alcott
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Princess Diaries series
Scarlet Letter
most of Nicholas Sparks
some of Jodi Piccoult's books (My Sister's Keeper comes to mind)
Ella Enchanted
Sarah, Plain and Tall series
Tuck Everlasting
Anne of Green Gables series, Avonlea series
National Velvet
Eragon
Inkheart
Into the Wild
Because of Winn Dixie
Unstrung Heroes
Marley & Me

I know that we've done others, but those are what the kids and I could think of off the tops of our heads.

Oh, I forgot Louis L'Amour. One of the boys looks online to see which books were made into movies, and he usually reads one of those every month.

I would skip the Nicholas Sparks books or movies. He's a pretty terrible writer and I'm not a fan of the movies. They are too corny not matter how many times Ryan Gosling takes his shirt off.

Secret of NHIM
Jumanji
Lemon Snicket
To Kill a Mockingbird

would be ones I'd add to the list.

Million Dollar Arm
Blind Side
Pursuit of Happiness
