We are white and live in College Park. It's fine.

I don't get the PG bashing? Has anyone actually lived here?

We have and we don't plan on going back.

Huh. Okay. We're happy enough here. I'm glad you found a place where you are happy too.

Ah yes, one of the Montgomery County residents who have never actually been to PG county. They come and troll the PC county schools forum every time the topic comes up. It was why we asked for (and were granted) a separate forum from the MD schools forum. It decreases the number of people like this.

In reality, the vast majority of the crimes in PG county occur in the 3-5% of the county that lies inside the beltway. Outside the beltway, the crime statistics are much more like Montgomery County. Fort Washington is fine.

That is bull shit, PG crime is nothing like Montgomery county. That is just a BS talking point people say to feel better about them selves and their chioces. The fact is PG has literly 3x-6x more violent crime despite having almost two hundred thousand people less. And on top of that PG is in multi-decade lows that correspond to the increased prosperity of of the DC region. if the DC area regresses or low SES people continue to relocate to PG we will most likely see a reversal of that trend. And the outside the beltway being this anti crime oasis is BS too, be it laurel, greenbelt, Beltsville or many others that are bad school & high crimes areas. The real clue for crime is that every where there is population density. It is that there aren't as many people in the rural areas that accounts for the overall lower crime making some isolated pockets look comparable to urban Montgomery county. Don't believe me?

I'll never know why people would chose higher taxes, some of the worst schools in the state, some of the highest and most violent crime, disproportionate policing and on and on to buy a house at a discount and then swear there is no reason for said discount. Keep lying to your selves and intrested new comers

Actually that poster is correct 80 percent of crime happens literally in a small pocket in the beltway. Also those areas u name have low crime rates n good schools. What great schools in Moco? U mean great tutors after school? Besides the only good schools there are in places where u have to spend 900k on a 80's split level home...,that's reason enough for me to stay in pg lol

Dear DCUM forums:

I apologize for all the PG posters who don't seem to grasp how to write using anything representing the general standards of this board.

I live in PG and am surrounded by well-educated, smart, and kind people. Some of them seem to show up here, but...some maybe could use remedial lessons in standard English. As a product of the PG county schools, I can say it was taught, but perhaps didn't stick.

Capitol Heights Elementary School is an amazing school, though I don't know about the middle school it feeds in to.

Live in Northern PG. Love it. I hear about lots of gangs/crime from my close-in MoCo friends. Have experienced none here in 13 years. I'm white fwiw- and my kids all go to pgcps (although have also gone to private for some grades).

Like someone said, crime outside the betlway is comparable to MoCo and other so-called nice affluent areas that surround DC. However, the further in you get the higher the crime rate. My mom lives in Temple Hills....well actually Hillcrest Heights and to be honest, I worry about her over there, but she's well known someone no one bothers her. There are pockets in various neighborhoods that are nice, but if you go a couple streets over it's ratchet as hell. Oddly enough, before moving out to Upper Marlboro me and the wife lived in Suitland and despite its reputation for high crime the 7 years that were there we really didn't have a problem with crime. Someone stole my neighbors truck once and this guy across street who drove this Infinity found his car on bricks (he had some bad ass rims) one morning. Other than that, it was quiet. Our biggest issue was trifling neighbors.

Um....UPPER Marlboro?

Well, that's cool and all, but since most of us here are already, uh, here, and well aware of the dynamics of our communities, I'm not sure why you are on this forum.

This post has some good points

Crime has been falling rapidly in PG County every year and it still has far less crime than DC where many people are moving too as well. More people of middle class incomes are coming to PG because it's one of the few affordable counties in the area that is still relatively close to DC. I purchased a home here two years ago and my house appraised at 50k above the value I paid for it. So despite what some people say PG County can be a good investment if you choose to live in the right place. Not to mention I only have a 20-25 minute commute to my job in DC.

To the posters who said Prince Georges county residents choose high crime, high taxes and bad schools, that the county is only for AA and that Hills or Heights or bad--you are overgeneralizing in a way that perpetuates the very issues you're complaining about. It's because of these stereotypes that the county does not have more diversity in the racial makeup of its residents, or its tax base in terms of companies moving to the county. The OP is renting in an apartment community and did not mention kids, therefore would not be impacted by property taxes or "bad" schools. Safety is paramount and when you tell someone they won't be safe, of course they will stay away--which is not fair if they have not gone and seen for themselves. I'm happy to see that OP is reaching out and asking questions for thwmselves. I'd also say visit the grocery store, walk the trail to the Wilson Bridge, and drive to the Fort Washington and see how you feel from there. Some people will always hate Prince George County, regardless of race or class, in my opinion. They should choose not to live there and refrain from spreading pure negative vitriol as well.

Can I hijack this thread to ask about middle school options for a quirky artistic kid near the hyattsville arts district?

College park is the best place to buy in DC if you want to gain equity. You can get in cheap and its undergoing a massive upgrade.

And they probably say the same thing about those living in DC. Most people historically moved to PG to escape a crumbling and neglected DC.
