I wouldn't pay more than $15 for a small lot. We paid $20-25 professionally for mow, edging and blowing. I'd rather have a professional with professional equiptment and liability insurance for anything more than $15, especially for a 14 year old. |
For $5 less, why would I use a teen rather than a professional company who will stand behind their work (with backup if a crew member is ill, has liability insurance, experience, etc.?) It needs to be significantly less than a professional company, even a cheap landscaping company. |
Sorry but you suck! Those cheap lanscaping crews are illegal immigrants. They may be cheaper on the front end but your taxes are going to ESOL, FARMS, welfare, subsidized housing, food stamps, ICE, etc... It looks like little Havana around here so the rich can have cheap maids and landscapers. OP, good for your son trying to do honest work. I once remember a time high schoolers worked at the mall, fast food, department stores, landscaping and food courts. Now illegal immigrants have taken those jobs and now demanding higher minimum wage because what was once part time jobs for high schoolers and college kids are now somehow "careers" for these lazy federal law breakers. And we enable them and our kids can not find any employment. Pathetic! |
High schoolers generally will not work at those jobs, nor will most Americans. We are trying to remodel our house and cannot find a contractor. They are either lazy or busy. If legals would take the jobs, most companies would hire. But they don't and have a business to run. And, almost everyone was an immigrant once. They are just trying to make a good life for their family, just like you. They pay taxes on all goods they buy, property taxes if they own a house, and many other things. Some pay federal and state taxes through a tax id number. I'd far rather my kid go with a FARMS/ESOL kid than yours. |
Not true. My uncle had a landscaping company for 15yrs with legal English speaking employees. He went out of business 9yrs ago. Cheap illegal immigrants work under the table. He couldn't compete since he paid hourly, taxes, insurance, liability. Veteran's company goes bankrupt. Immigrants do cheap labor with no taxes and don't need insurance (ER) or benefits (government) But sure, try and rationalize that all these jobs had no employees until illegal immigrants saved the day. All they do by working for pennies is put more money in the hands of the already rich CEO/owners while legal citizens lose small businesses, pt jobs, nod their careers. |
First, you should watch the way you communicate with others. Second, I have no problem if my tax dollars are going to things to help families who need the money. You are mixing apples and oranges because ILLEGAL immigrants aren't getting government money not connected to school. Third, the landscaping crew my professional company uses sends out the same two guys each time. Both are blonde, American, and in their 20s, and attend NOVA. |
Op, we pay our 14 year old neighbor to do this weekly. He charged $20 for the mow but we added $5 and asked him to lead blow and edge. He uses his mower and our trimmer and leaf blower. I would say he does a decent but not perfect job, not as good as professionals, but I like supporting a local kid who is industrious. If he charged much more, though, we would go back to professionals. |
My 13 year old is getting paid $20 for the neighbors yard during their vacations (Oh to be an empty nester and travel)
We live in Lorton/Fairfax Station. The yard is about 40 minutes of work I think. My dad, down the street pays a crew $35 for nearly 1/2 an acre, which took me over an hour back in the day. I think it's more about the "neighbor" aspect than the price. They see what my yard looks like with him mowing. |
How is $20 for 1.5 hours not minimum wage? |
Really? You are completely misinformed. |
Really? I guess CNN is as well: http://money.cnn.com/2014/11/20/news/economy/immigration-myths/ Quoting from the article: "Myth #3: They drain the system -- Undocumented immigrants do not qualify for welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and most other public benefits. Most of these programs require proof of legal immigration status and under the 1996 welfare law, even legal immigrants cannot receive these benefits until they have been in the United States for more than five years." |
I pay $35 per visit to a professional landscaping company. 1/2 acre lot |
