I care way more about how my home looks inside than how I look. Isn't that funny... I think of it as I welcome family and people to my home so it has to be nice. With real art (not prints) and nice plates, glasses, chairs, bathrooms. No one actually cares what I am wearing or about my makeup etc. As long as I am clean it's ok. |
Me too |
To me, function and cleanliness are beauty. I have rugs, art, lamps. I really need to motivate for drapes and pinteresting the shit out of my kids rooms, but I am not inspired or motivated right now. Would rather wait than get cheap crap from Pier One or Target Kids. |
Or enjoy doing. With extra baby weight I try to dress neatly but style isn't the fun it once was. My house is still lovely though. To each his own, I guess. |
+1 I have a hard time spending money on clothes at this weight. Spend a lot (relatively) on hair, makeup though... And definitely the house. |
I kind of do, but I'm lazy. And I kind of like fairly bare spaces/walls. Which you could say is a design in and of itself. ![]() |
I love nice interiors and really enjoy having a pretty home to come home to every night.
Maybe the ones who don't care about the appearance of their interiors should make one room really nice and see how much enjoyment they get out of it. I agree with being surprised by friends who always look great and then you see that their home looks like a college apartment. |
No $$$$$$$ |
Most people don't have time for friends or to entertain and if they are the only ones that see it who cares. |
I used to keep my interior updated, but life is way too busy with 3 teenagers. I'm barely keeping food in the house. Someday I'd like to prioritize this again. |
My guy friends often have houses that look like frat houses. They might be 40 and make six figures, but they still have the same damn black leather couch all the 22-year-olds buy straight out of college.
My girlfriends generally have better taste, but I think some of them are waiting for "the guy" to come along and whisk them out of their rental apartments or small condos into a big mansion that they will then decorate. I think some people just don't care. I think some people care a little, but don't know how to decorate. I think some people care a lot and have really terrible taste. My house is mostly nice, but there are little pockets I haven't had time to deal with yet. Like my kitchen. It will likely be the last room in the house to be repainted, because doing so involves lots of work packing stuff up and moving stuff around, and the current color is ok, just not great. And my bedroom. It could use a paint job, but because the current color is pretty close to the color I plan to paint it, other rooms took priority. (I've lived in my house for 3 years.) |
For me it's largely a matter of time and focus. I work full time and I'd much rather spend my weekends at a park or biking or hiking with my family then shopping. I don't have a lot of money and suffer buyers remorse big time, so it just doesn't occur to me to look for home furnishings. I don't have a good eye for it, either. I mainly only think about it right before people are coming over and then I feel embarrassed. I'd actually like it if one of my home decorating savvy friends to me under their wing, if they did it in a kind non judgmental way.
But I don't dress all that well either, for mostly the same reasons, so I know I'm not op's friend. |
I care, but I don't have the time or money to make my house look put together. Plus my DH doesn't care about living like a grad student. If I'd spend a little money now on pieces of used or cheapish furniture, then I'll never get the things I'd really want because he won't understand why we need to replace them, so I keep on with the ratty hand me downs we have. With young children and busy weekend schedules, I don't have the time to go out estate sale shopping to find things that be a little cheaper but still decent quality. Luckily I'm getting a vintage dining room set from my in-laws soon and that will at least make that room look a bit more grown up, though I worry my kids will destroy the chairs. It'll be some time before I can buy myself good pieces of furniture for other rooms that look like they belong together.
Unless I suddenly won the lottery - yes indeed then I'd hire an interior designer to come fix it all up. |
I have wondered this too. It's all of a piece for me. If you care about what your body looks like, you should care about what your house looks like too. |
