Who would you hire, VT grad or UVA grad?

Which thread had UVA negativity? I've met so many UVA grads that are full of themselves, but I still wouldn't hold my general impression against a single candidate?

Honestly, to all of the schools listed on here. I don't care what school a kid attended, what classes they took, and I certainly don't care about the GPA. When I hire I want someone who can speak passionately about some project they have done. I want someone who has overcome some type of obstacle and can demonstrate that they learned something from it. I want someone who is a little hungry. I LOVE a kid who had to work for money during college. If I'm being 100% honest, I find that these BIG NAME school grads tend to lack hunger of some of the more scrappy Big 10 or smaller-known schools.

Good luck trying to get someone who can do anything technical with that criteria. The bottom line is, do the skills and experience and major line up with the job. The other stuff is fluff and good for lunch hour talk.

Thought Berkeley carries its weight everywhere. Isn't it usually ranked the top public college? But don't get your hopes up too high if DS is asian or white and not a resident. GL with that.

actually many companies do not hire college graduates. prefer to hire cheaper foreign h1bs for temporary work.

in the 80s most companies would always have some college graduates in the pipeline. doesn't work that way anymore.

True, and I would go with the Tech background. Pick up any paper and look at the want ads. All technical computer and engineering jobs with prerequisites I don't even understand.

I would think Berkeley would carry more weight anywhere outside of the.DC area

I would pick based on the individual but for what it's worth I know a lot of UVA and Va tech grads (I grew up in No VA) and the UVA grads tend to be more successful financially/professionally, but most were better students/harder workers to begin with.

I know a number of UVA and VT grads, as well, and I could never make the above statement. I know very successful people/hard workers etc. from both schools. You can't differentiate that way. It does depend on the individual.

If someone doesn't know Berkeley they are living under a rock.

I would hire someone with a wide range of experiences and great internships. Also, as another pp said, someone who had to overcome something challenging, etc.

VT or UVA? I have met plenty of nice grads from both schools but no one who blew me away academically or professionally. Just very nice people. No one who was going to set the world on fire.
