I recall reading in Consumer Reports that installing the carseat using the seatbelt was actually safer than using the LATCH in the CR tests, provided that the seat is installed correctly, so it should not be a problem to put the carseat in the middle using the seat belt.
We put the Graco snugride behind the passenger seat b/c it was touching the driver's seat if we put it on that side. When it came time to switch to a forward-facing seat, however, we switched to the middle position and used the seatbelt. |
I had the DC EMS person install it for me, I just brought it and she showed me how to do it. I had really bad pregnancy carpal tunnel and I couldn't pull the straps tight enough...she was very helpful.
I too, had to put mine behind the passenger seat as DH is 6'3" and we only have one car. If we put it in the middle, he would not be able to sit in the front at all! Now he has to drive anytime we are both in the car...nice perk for me! |
We also had ours installed/inspected in Montgomery County and they said the center was safest. I have a new car with the LATCH system, but they used the seat belt in the center instead. They said the side airbags made it dangerous to install the car seat behind either seat.
We did not attempt to install on our own. They installed it but walked us through what they were doing. |
