So can I still use it in DC and MD or nah? |
You can use it in DC, VA and MD, notwithstanding what others are saying. I don't know who the cab defenders are but they clearly haven't ridden in one in a very long time. Also, the insurance statements are untrue: http://blog.uber.com/ridesharinginsurancepolicy |
What about uber taxi?
It is much faster than calling a taxi in upper NW DC. These are metered taxis, aren't they regulated the same as other DC taxi's? |
Once you go Uber you will never go back to a taxi unless forced too. Just another reason the younger folks want to live in the City-progressive transit options! |
Just another example of the nanny state at work. The government is pretending to protect the interests of uber's customer in the name of safety, but they are really just protecting the interests of taxi cab companies who don't like the competition.
It is amusing to me that when conservatives use "safety regulations" to force abortion clinics to close, liberals think that it is reprehensible, but when liberals use "safety concerns" to force uber and other car sharing services to shutdown, it is just in the name of safety and concern for their fellow citizens. |
So true. I love Uber and never take taxis any more. |
juts got a email from uber, the contents dispute what most of you are saying about insurance and background checks...
from the email : You may have heard that Uber received a cease and desist letter from the Virginia DMV yesterday. We wanted to write to let you know that Uber will operate as usual, and we plan to continue full-speed ahead with our commitment to providing Virginians access to safe, affordable and reliable rides. We are surprised and disappointed by the DMV’s actions, given that Uber has been working with the Virginia government for months to modernize regulations that will put consumer safety first. Virginia should be standing for innovation, consumer choice and job growth. Uber has set the standard for consumer safety in the Commonwealth. All uberX rides in Virginia are insured up to $1,000,000, nearly 300% more than the $350,000 required of for-hire drivers by the Virginia DMV. While the Virginia DMV does not require that all for-hire drivers pass background checks, all drivers on the Uber platform pass rigorous background checks at the county, state and federal level before they are ever allowed access to the technology. Our commitment to safety far exceeds the requirements set by the Virginia DMV - making their actions puzzling. If you want continued access to the safest and most affordable rides on the road, we need you to email, call and tweet your policymakers and tell them #VAneedsUber. Let Virginia policymakers know that banning ridesharing not only harms the countless riders who use the platform to connect with safe, affordable and reliable rides, but it also hurts thousands of small business entrepreneurs who rely on the platform to make a living, create new jobs and contribute to the economy. Take a look at the MD PSC case, Uber was asked to provide the following on several occassions and failed to provide the PSC with the informati0on..
Who is conducting your background checks? Who is inspecting the cars? Explain how the surge pricing works? ther eis a close to 100 page opinion issued by the public service commission and Uber has yet to provide one answer, sure they can write an email, make it sound all cute and all but that insurance policy is there to protect Uber, not the passenger, not the people in the other car. dig deep and you will find the answers. Do you believe everything people say? I find it hard to beelive the woudl be shut down if they were in compliance. |
THANKFULLY someone is standing up for the taxi cab driver and owner just trying to make it work with out of date equipment, sub-par insurance, and piss-poor customer service.
Companies like uber are the future, and VA would be well served to figure out how to incorporate into a regulatory structure. |
After countless no-show cabs and unbelievably rude behavior from cab drivers, I tried Uber and will never take another regular cab if I can avoid it. |
My husband recently lost his job and is driving for uber in the interim...they did a background check on him and inspected his car...so I do know their drivers are checked out. |
