Brunettes - when did you decide to start coloring the gray?

+1. Probably mid 30s.

Early to mid 20's. When I couldn't hide the Greta underneath the brown hair anymore.

I have jet black hair, but I started coloring it when I realized I couldn't put up my hair without a sea of silver glaring at me. I was probably 32. Honestly, there is the whole "gray acceptance" movement, and I'm all for it, but I didn't like the way it looked on me, and so I did something about it!

I started getting gray in my early 20s (found my first few in my teens). Im 29 now and I have some scattered gray but no large streaks. I keep saying Im going to color it but really, it's more effort than I feel like putting in just for other people, because it doesn't bother me at all and it doesn't seem to bother my husband. Some other family members have commented and asked when I'm getting it colored and I just say soon! and then put it off.

I have never heard of a "Gray Acceptance Movement" PP.

And most likely there will never be one.

Youth will never go out of style as long as humanity exists.

Sitting here w/color in my hair right now, waiting for 30 minutes to be up to rinse it out! I started occasionally coloring my hair at around 42 or so . . . minimal gray. Not a ton now at 46, but enough that it bothers me and I have a hard time leaving it along (and not plucking all the gray out!). Coloring hair at home is a pain, but so much cheaper and FASTER than going to a salon. The time at a salon (not to mention the $$) killed me (2-3 hours) . . .

I have black thick hair and started getting white hairs 5 yrs ago. They are very noticeable and mostly on top of my head. Many family and friends have commented on it. I love them all and don't plan to color my hair. I'm proud of my age and all the life experiences I've had! Older and wiser

My hairstylist told me that she was going to have a tough time using highlights alone to cover/distract from the gray, so I started doing permanent dyes soon thereafter. Start with highlighting if you can. Also try the demi or semi permanent colors from at-home boxes that wash out over 6-8 weeks.

I have thick, longish hair and now feel totally stuck with coloring. My choices are to cut off all of my hair (not going to happen) or keep coloring. Problem is, I am 100% happy with the color of my hair only once in awhile. Most of the time, it seems too light or too dark to me. In fact, I came on here to find recommendations for a new colorist after spending $120 this weekend and feeling very unhappy with my current color.

In short, hold off as long as you can, then go for low-risk solutions before taking the plunge!

41. I didn't have any Greys (just 1 or 2 is just pluck).

I hate grey hair so once there were more started getting Demi-rinse every 6 weeks. Now at 5 weeks at 44.

My dad and brother have similar hair. My dad at 73 is still more dark than grey without coloring--about 70-30. His dad was same way. With his olive skin, blue eyes and dark hair that greys minimally- I feel like I hit genetic jackpot.

My mom and sister went prematurely gray in their mid-20s and have been coloring since then.

I too used to pluck the grays but it is not longer possible. My 5 year old turns me more and more gray each day. I am about 10% gray but since my hair is med/dark brown it is fairly noticable to me.

I haven't done the hair dye thing yet but I do use John Frieda Brilliant Brunnette Color Glaze. While it does not cover the grey it does turn it into highlights which is kind of nice, and gives hair a good shine. Adds 2 min to my shower routine. The down side a bottle only lasts about a week (you need to use every other time you wash your hair) so it is aboout 8 bucks a week, or $400/year (if you buy on amazon - more if you get at the drugsotre) but if you want to try something not as strong as a dye I recommend it.

Late 40s, I started coloring mine about 10 years ago because of all the extra grays I was seeing. I have had it done at a salon but really it didn't look any better than what I could do at home with a box of Clairol or Garnier or whatever. I dye my roots every month or so now and alternate between a light/golden and medium brown. I think the gray makes me look so much older, ugh. But my mom never dyed her hair and had pretty salt/pepper hair in her 40s, and now has beautiful silver hair. So when I get old enough I'm gonna stop, lol, but right now I like it brunette and not gray!

PS I got my first gray hair when my first child was born, I was in my 20s. Didn't get a lot til my 40s tho.

I started coloring when about 5-10% of my hair was grey.

In the last 6 months, I can no longer do either. There are too many to hide with styling/tricks. Also, my hairs are very thick so an individual gray hair against my dark hair . . . . it's very noticeable.

I'm bummed b/c I'm sure coloring will never look as natural as I wish it to be. Plus the maintenance is unappealing.

I haven't started dying my hair yet, but I'm bummed, too. I'm vain about my hair! I just know it won' tlook as good when I start to dye it.

Then you have a bad colorist.

I started when I could no longer pluck the occasional.

The key to dark color is to use a gloss. My hair looks like a Pantene commercial. I sometimes get it professionally done, but ofter do a f
Gloss box at home. I have random strangers approach me and tell me my hair looks so healthy and shiny. People ask me what I eat.
