Can you eat bacon while pregnant?

Its it a boy? I could not get enough meat while pregnant with my DS. I turned into a ravenous carnivore.

Even prosciuotto is in the gray area. U.S. says no to any unless cooked (e.g., on pizza). Europe says fine if you freeze them first. Interestingly, U.S. includes smoked fish in this category, but Europe says smoked fish is fine because they've not found real-world data to suggest that there is actually a risk. U.S. says even if risk is purely theoretical, it is still a risk (true enough, but obviously take from that what you will). Bacon is in neither of these categories anyway since it's cooked, though.

My basic rule is to avoid deli counters, salad bars, and mass-produced cured meats and fish that may not have been consistently refrigerated, and not to stress too much about cured meats and smoked fish from fancier places that prepare it fresh themselves.

Ugh, prosciutto that should say!

That's because prosciutto is most often eaten uncooked. Bacon is not.

Why are nitrates so bad? I have cooked deli meat everyday and doctor said it's no problem.

Nitrates in general are shitty for your health. I would avoid them pregnant or not.

I think that's becoming debatable:

I have been jonesing for some lox.

My husband and I had a huge fight about bacon the other day: I ate a cobb salad with maybe one slice crumbled over the top; he went apeshit saying that I was poisoning our child with nitrates. I knew it wasn't a big deal. I rarely eat it anyway. I am planning a trip to the Silver Diner, where they serve gluten-free French toast with marriage-safe, nitrate-free bacon.

I ate bacon and prosciutto (cooked and uncooked) my entire pregnancy. I couldn't get enough of any cured meats! With my 2nd pregnancy I craved steak tartar and runny poached eggs on toast smothered with goat cheese. I ate it often and was fine.

I have no qualms about eating prosciutto or any other cured meat or -gasp- raw fish during pregnancy.

I pay attention to the quality and sourcing of where I eat my food, which is the greater variable to control. No way in hell would I eat a cold cut sandwich from Subway or a similar place, for a multitude of reasons, including the listeria risk and general "ick" factor of the "food" they serve.

And I ate plenty of Subway and my baby and toddler are happy and healthy as well!

I eat bacon frequently but was told to cut back because of the salt. Other than that I think it's safe to eat.

I have to agree, I've seen too many subways closed by the health department not to mention got BAD food poisoning at a subway where it was coming out of both ends, lol. I know they aren't all the same, but it's turned me off to this chain.
