If your corneas are too thin, you may be eligible for the implants. It's pretty much cataract surgery but they put in a
Prescription lense. Dr. Mark Whitten does it. |
Do not even THINK of doing this. Do some research that is not an ad. many very unhappy patients out there. |
Thanks for the heads up. I had my eyes done in 1994. Had to go back to glasses a few years ago, but nearly as strong. I'd love an alternative thst doesn't involve more surger |

That should read, "not nearly as strong".

Why do you think that replacement cornea surgery is such a bad idea? I googled around a bit on non-commercial medical websites and it seems very common. It is a very common surgery for older people with cataracts to have and is recommended as quite safe. Medicare even pays for it. Can you explain further or provide some links? |
| Can you be knocked out for LASIK or do you have to be awake? I'm a big medical baby and couldn't deal with being awake. |
| My neighbor loves her implants. But, everyone is different based on their risks and background. i'm sure late 50s eyes are different from younger eyes. |
I'm a big baby, as well. However, getting my ears pierced was worse than LASIK. Honestly. It's not bad. |
NP here, is there a fee for the first consultation? |
| I was about a negative 8 in both eyes and did PRK 7 years ago based on my doctor's (Dr. Kang from EDOW) recommendation. I wanted to do LASIK but had some dryness issues with my eyes so my doctor recommended that I wait 6 months for the dryness to improve before doing any surgery. Doctor was awesome, gave great guidance and info to help me make a decision (didn't hurt that he has a great rep and graduated from Harvard) One of the best decisions I made and I still have 20/20 vision. ... |

My eyes are about like yours. I had a consult for LASIK years ago (to the big name everyone talks about). My corneas are thin and my pupils are large. They claimed they could still do it but not guarantee it since they would not be able to make a second cut. My trusted regular eye doctor advised me to walk.

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/812387 There are others -- these are people who were forced to do this b/c of cataracts. Not very happy with results in many cases. This is not LASIC however. most people are very happy with that. BUT I would NEVER do this if I was a marginal candidate. You have not idea how inconvenient it is to be blind. |
Thanks, PP, but I can't get this link to work. Can you try again or post an article title/cite information? |
| Best money I have spent. My doctor retired, but his practice is now part of TLC. |
| Dont risk it and dont go to the LASIK factories. I would go to a real doctor with a cornea background. They can do a real reveiw of your condition and give you an objective opinion on whether its safe. My recommendations would be to go to Alisa Kim or Larry Frank. They are great ophthalmologists who are straight shooters. Some of these LASIK factories feel like used car salesmen trying to get you to buy something on the cheap. |
