Where can you find the statement? My google search brings me back here.

i received Cheh's statement in an email and then I posted it here. but it's written like a press release so it will likely be posted to her website if it's not already there.

Wow, that's a not so subtle dog whistle there. Agree with 11:54, Gray may have bungled his rep and political future if it is ever proven that he engaged in the shadow campaign. That said, Gray, Mendelson, Catania, Cheh, Evans - all four are quality, engaged, knowledgeable pols.

Uh . . . 5? I'd disagree with more than your math, especially on Evans and Mendelson. Gray was actually quite effective as Council Chair

Bowser's statement will be as vague as possible, she's searching for support east of the river. Fortunately she's got race and the Dem machine on her side. Catania's position is going to be the most interesting and complex. He's smarter than Bowser and Gray combined (though so is my cat). He's certainly the most informed about Education and attuned to the differences between charters and DCPS. He's probably unelectable, being white, gay, and non-Dem, but I'll vote for him anyway. Cheh is like an exotic plant, she couldn't survive outside of Ward 3.

There's nothing subtle in my assertion that large swaths of DC will vote against Catania because he is A) white, B) gay, and C) not a Democrat. I'm openly calling out the city on its biases, and I'm not afraid to say so. The racists, homophobes, and closedminded Democrats-uber-alles voters of this city absolutely cannot and will not open their eyes to the fact that he is far more competent than his opponent. DC likes to think it cares about diversity, but it does not and just wait until the general election for proof.

I agree.

I'm a Democrat who is far to the left of our president on national security/empire and economic issues, and I've been surprised to see people embrace Bowser the same way I've been surprised at the unwavering support of Obama despite his vote on retroactive immunity for illegal wire taps back in 08, his "compromise" on taxes for the 1% and his expansion of drone strikes. I get that politics is played out through parties and that we must vote for the lesser of two evils (e.g. Obama versus anyone from the freak show that is the national GOP) , but I don't think Bowser is the lesser of two evils --- she sure as hell hasn't said anything to demonstrate that.

I don't see a lot of specifics in what she's saying.

Neighborhood kids to neighborhood schools? Is there a change in Ward 3 that couldn't be characterized that way? There's not a whole lot of neighborhood kids at Eaton or Oyster, Key kids can still go to a nearby school, just not the one they used to.

Grandfathering? Everyone knows there's going to be grandfathering.

My prediction is she declares victory when grandfathering is announced and waves as the boundary changes go by.

Considering how out of touch Cheh is with most W3 issues, i'm glad to see she issued this.

Yes, when I later reread the post, realized I had miscounted. I may not like Evans, but hard to argue he does not know what he is doing. Not a big of Mendelson, but he doesn't treat his post as a part-time job.

I am with you on this one!

I am glad someone has issued a statement about these proposals!

Under at least one proposal, HS would be by lottery city-wide. That would affect all students and parents in all wards including Ward 3.

The grandfathering issue is still outstanding but I have heard many a parent wish aloud that the boundary change proposal had included some sort of statement about it. At least they could have said that kids in schools right now could stay there rather than having so many families wondering if they would have to start thinking about a move in less than 18 months.

Mary Cheh has voiced the concerns of her constituents. That's called representation.

“I appreciate the effort that the Deputy Mayor of Education has invested in reviewing school assignment policies. However, I want to make clear that I will vigorously oppose any plan that does not maintain the right of families to send their children to their neighborhood public schools.

It used to be that families, frequently after elementary school, would flee the District for Maryland and Virginia in order for their children to attend better public schools. In recent years, as our schools have improved and as families’ confidence in DCPS has been restored, we have seen a reversal of this trend. Many families who have moved into the District recently have purchased their homes precisely because of the public schools in their neighborhoods. Forcing children out of neighborhood schools will shatter this confidence – especially if families are forced to participate in a lottery that will send children far away from their homes.

I am also disappointed that the recommendations do not discuss any grandfathering provisions. No matter what changes may be made, it is essential that the students and their families currently in the public school system be held harmless and not be forced to change schools. I look forward to working with the Deputy Mayor, with the PTAs of Ward 3 schools, and with families and residents to craft a plan that both addresses overcrowding and ensures neighborhood schools.”

I cannot find it anywhere... Though I really hope this is her statement, I am afraid it is a fake..
