How to keep 7 yo motivated?

That seems like a very competitive team for a 7 year old. Is there no other team to join? Most of the kids I know don't start swimming year round till age 9 or 10 if they're into swimming and he's on a team where the kids apparently started at age 5. The kids who start on swim team year round are very competitive and travel all around for meets. My 7 year old would not be up for this.
