SAHM applying to schools: list your former, maybe future, profession? leave blank? "homemaker"?

How about, None, N/A or just leave it blank. The admissions people will figure it out. Also SAHM is not really and occupation (your are not generating income) so its technically not an answer to the question. I also think that the questions is not meant to guage the education level of the household - they can get that information from the education background section of the application. They want to know if you have a job and what you do at said job.

Final thought, this is the one question that I would not worry about too much.

No reason to list former, definitely not future profession--what purpose would that serve? Just state, "at home".

If you have a JD and passed the bar, are you not an attorney, even if not practicing? I will be a physician forever, even if I stop practicing. If I stopped working and filled out the form, I would call myself a retired physician.

Say what you want them to know about you, there is no standard answer. I often say former lawyer, sometimes I don't. If you met someone at a party who asked you what you do, how would you answer the question? I would say I'm a lawyer but I'm not working right now because I'm home with the kids. Thats how I answer the question. But you won't be graded and there's no right or wrong.
