Urban gardening question: Would this work?

Anonymous
I have 6 crates stacked with a boot tray on the bottom.
I melted holes in the crates and planted geraniums on three sides.
Stacking saves space in my green house.
I will water the top crates with a steady drip of 1/4 strength 20/20/20
The water drains down to the rest of the crates from the top

To save water and warm the soil wrap the stack in poly.
Stack 4 piles of crates wrap with poly and put a sheet of glass on top for a roof to make a green house.

Run wood poles or rope between the stacks and train cucumber or tomatoes sideways.

These are just my ideas for next year - should work for strawberries too.

What kind of light do you get? That's going to be one of the biggest influences on what you can grow. If you have a nice south-facing outdoor space without a lot of shade in the daytime, you can probably get veggies, but if you don't get much direct sun, you'll have to be more strategic with what you plant.

If you do a google image search for "vertical planter" you'll get a ton of ideas (doesn't have to be milk crates). You can also hang plants if you don't have much space. I don't have any outdoor space, but I have a hanging garden in my south-facing windows.

Hey OP,

I'm feeling your spirit, even if I don't really have the green thumb to pull it off.

You can also consider pallet gardening:

Or rain gutter gardening:

Good luck. Try it out. Come back in a year and let us know how it's going.
