"That One"

That will go over great when McCain blanks out on the name of a Head of State during an important meeting.

Exactly!

Let's give McCain the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was not an intended or unintended racist remark. It was either generally very disrespectful to purposely refer to Senator Obama as "that one", or he forgot Obama's name. Either way it's bad.

It amazes me how critical people are. Have you ever momentarily blanked out on someone's name? I suspect that most people have. It's not the end of the world. Don't run out and buy rations.

I am not running for President. I do not need to worry about blanking out on national tv and referring to another candidate as "THAT ONE". McCain does. Presentation counts for something and he is screwing it up.

2 years from now when he is still calling his wife a c*nt, acting like a moron and putting down people he works with you will wish you were more critical and that you had noticed the behaviors earlier, before you elected him into office.

It would have gone over much better had McCain giggled and admited he forgot the name.

Yeah, or winked.

I disagree. I think you're trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

As a PP noted, everyone blanks out on a name once in a while. Even so, I don't think it's overreacting because of the context. McCain has been visibly and repeatedly disdainful and disrespectful to Obama throughout the campaign-- no eye contact in the last debate, nasty look when Obama greeted him in the Senate last week, challenging his patriotism and suggesting he's not a "real" American, to name just a few examples.

I think it would have emphasized that McCain is too old and losing his marbles.

Totally agree with this. I'm a younger DCUM and didn't know much about McCain's history in regard to race/women/gays etc. Did some online research today and WOW! McCain's got quite a colorful history. Couldn't believe C*nt story. Or how about when he refers to the vietnamese as "gooks"?

Obviously McCain was coached not to be so nasty this time. But he can't hide his contempt for Obama. Which leaves me to wonder, is it Obama's credentials and experience he disdains? My radar tells me it's more than that. I think McCain resents having to acknowledge a negro as his rival, his equal in the polls and on the stage. My personal belief is that he is a racists and he resents having to hide it.

And when you do blank out do you refer to the person as "that one"? Come on!!

I noticed immediately and interpreted this as McCain forgetting Obama's name... and sorry to say, it reminded me of my mid-70s father who is in perfect physical and mental health but inevitably is slipping in terms of memory. Maybe this is ageist but it was another reminder to me that McCain is simply past his prime, and too old to handle the presidency.

Ugh--leave it to you libs to be totally predictable and smug! OK, we get it, and your guy is going to win. Smile with your typical self-satisfaction and enjoy paying those taxes!
(I would ask you Obama supporters to name one actual accomplishment he can claim other than writing memoirs about all he has accomplished, but I kind of give up....)

I buy that McCain might have blanked on Obama's name. Happens to me. But the thing I'm judging him on is how artfully he handles it. Couldn't stand Reagan but I could see him as having handled it better. I don't believe that McCain is a racist on a personal level but if you're concerned about being sensitive to others' perceptions, you think carefully about what kind of language you use. Anyone who has been paying attention to these things over the last few years knows the danger of a "you people" type statement.

I've said it before but whether we like it or not, part of being a politician is managing perceptions, whether it's avoiding a question artfully or finding ways to hammer your main theme home. (Again, see Reagan.) For whatever reason, I think McCain is having difficulty with this and the fact that he was unaware enough to understand how "that one" would be perceived shows either that he is very tired from campaigning or doesn't care enough to take the time to understand this.

This is ridiculous, and I am an Obama supporter.

This made me laugh because I really get the feeling that McCain is pretty out of it (except when it comes to wanting MORE WAR).
