I left my firm 4 years ago and have been on the panel for most of that time. I'm on the CCAN side. I quit because my firm made me miserable and I had the financial cushion to do it. 4 years later and I'm very happy with the decision and am financially doing better than my crappy small firm pay. It took about 2 years to have consistent cases come in through appointments.
