I've been both a SAHM and a WOHM, and I didn't read any of the previous WOHM comments as hateful. |
| WOHM here. I do not feel one iota of guilt for WOH. I do resent the attitude from SAHMs like the PP that I have something to feel guilty for. I just want the best qualified person for whatever job I'm hiring for. Unfortunately for a lot of SAHMs reentering the workforce in a bad economy, there are going to be more qualified applicants with fresher skills for most jobs. I have no anti-SAHM bias in hiring, but I'm not going to hire one over another applicant with fresher skills either. |
No guilt here. OP was snarky and bitchy - you reap what you sow, my dear. |
It is not resentment or guilt, at least not for me. (My mom and sis were sahms). It's just that when rentering the work force they should expect that they will most likely not waltz into a job. Employers are looking for experienced people who have worked very recently or are currently working. As such Sahms are at a disadvantage and need to recognize that and not expect to get the same type of position as someone who chose not to sahm. Just like I as a wohm have to accept that I miss some of my child's milestones one of the consequences of returning to work. |
OK, maybe not relevant for the job you're posting. But if it's for a secretary, event manager or similar position that makes the skill relevant, why not? |
Lots of SAHM return to work due to connections too--keep up your network! I've hired a few based on manager's friendship with spouse or previous work relationship. |
| SAHM here. OP (and all others who have convinced themselves that WOHMs are just taking out their guilt on you by not hiring you), I think you're confusing a preference for workers who have recent experience and demonstrated job commitment with hatred or jealousy. |
| Regarding getting "credit" for organizing PTA activities, etc, I think it's probably similar to anytime you're changing "fields," particularly when the field you are leaving is undervalued. So things like working a retail job, organizing child-related activities, sometimes teaching or admin work - those tasks are not going to be valued by much if you are trying to get hired in a different field even if you know the experience really will apply. It's just reality. I know a number of people who were retail managers for years, a job that actually requires a lot of skill that could translate to an office job - none of them were able to switch to office jobs except at the very entry level. |
Good point. That type of position and SAH aren't leagues apart, so maybe. |
| Fed - PLEASE don't get a job in my office. I have done my job and most likely MOST of what you have done over the past 8 years so I don't want to hear about how hard juggling your schedule it or how it's hard to leave your kids to go to work! |
