Why not start with safe neighborhoods and work your way back. |
| Most of the crime in DC is committed by people who come in from Maryland and Virginia. I hope our new cameras can track them. |
I actually watch my speed quite carefully, I am one of thosee annoying drivers that slows down when rock creek parkway goes by the Kennedy Center and the speed limit drops to 25 mph (not sure what the safety reason is for that btw. I generally drive around 30 on commuter roads, slower on residential streets. My most recent "speeding" ticket was $125 for going 36 mph on Missouri, I did not realize the speed limit dropped when you cross Georgia Ave. Oh yes, and I received a $150 ticket when making a legal right turn on red when my front bumper crossed the line (completely empty street, sidewalk and crosswalk) when I stopped before turning. |
Frankly, the kind of contempt for our city that this PP exhibits sounds like an excellent argument for speed cameras aimed at suburban drivers. |
| They get DC drivers, too. |
Are you sure you got it on Canal? One PP said near Sibley--that's MacArthur Blvd. They have speed cameras up and down MacArthur all the time. If that ugly box on Canal is a speed camera, then I'm wrong. But I did read the article about the MPD having cameras that just track license plates for a Big Brother criminal investigation database. |
Probably, but most of the drivers who speed through the city are suburbanites acting out of utter contempt. |
Is it your impression that people in DC are not in much of a hurry? Or that they are inherently more law abiding? Or more civic-minded? OMG after reading the Snowpocalypse threads, it's Lord of the Flies out there. |
It is indeed my impression that DC drivers are much more inclined to respect pedestrians, although we may be in a hurry. We're also less likely to be driving on these roads in fringe areas that suburbanites confuse with highways. |
|
Adding that a lot of us (DC drivers) don't routinely do ANY highway driving, so we're not at all in the habit of driving at highway speeds.
That doesn't mean we'll be tolerant when you obstruct us because of sheer idiocy or unfamiliarity, but it does mean we're not inclined to drive at speed not appropriate for city streets when we're unobstructed. |

Off topic, but does anyone know what those new devices are that are popping up all over Montgomery County? They are white and cylindrical up on posts at intersections, and seem to flash randomly, not necessarily after red light. If they are cameras, they seem to be pointed into the cars, not at them. Randolph RD has a few. Also River Rd and Wilson Lane.
|
| PP, I've always thought those were traffic cameras. |
Sorry but this is just not factual |
| I have received a ticket from the Canal Road camera. It was from before it was taken down and then re-installed but yes, at some point it was actively and issuing tickets. |
The people in their local neighborhood, maybe. The ones actually commuting are doing what everyone else does. Suburbanites know what a real highway looks like BTW. |
