| You might be able to custom order one and request that they use fake sugar or one of those Weight Watchers frozen things, but seriously, most of the cake is going to end up on his face than in his mouth. |
| Cakes by Happy Eatery in Centerville and Manassas, VA have diabetic and vegan style cakes (I think they have a recipe for just about everything). I can't tell the difference between the sugar free and their regular cakes. Friend said the vegan cake tastes just like devil's food cake. Yummy! Great selection and the customer service is excellent |

Giving artificial sweetener to a one year old to avoid any sugar is a really bad idea. Sugar is far better for you than artificial sweetener.
OP why buy something? Just make a sugar free bread of some kind. These are little kids and it doesn't really matter if they eat it or not. Seeing as there won't be icing or anything, a bread loaf is what you want. |
Vegan =/= sugar free. Far from it - they have to compensate for the absence of all the things that make baked good delicious (butter, eggs, cream) with - wait for it - extra sugar. |
Uh, yeah. And not very good bread at that - most decent homemade bread has some sugar in it. And the level of navel-gazing required to think abotu this for more than 3 seconds, much less post a question, is pretty astonishing. |
| I would just make some sort of quick bread that uses fruit puree or applesauce in lieu of sugar. Agree that feeding a baby something with artificial sweetener is much worse than sugar. |
|
OP here, thanks everyone! The kid just doesn't like super sweet stuff, he won't eat some purees but rather have plain yogurt!
I definitely don't plan on using an artificial sweetener, I don't even like that for myself! I think they taste gross, I read applesauce is much better. I'm also not being super crazy and will do a low sugar frosting, I just don't want him to end up with a tummy ache from all the sugar. Thanks again! |
You could make him a savory cake. Not really a dessert but it could be round and look like a cake. Not sure why if you are doing frosting - pretty much all sugar, that you are worried about a bit of sugar in a cake. |

So the question is really "How can I produce a cake for a kid who doesn't actually like cake, which is just as well because I don't want him to like cake, because then he might eat it?"
In other words, you are asking a How question, and you need to ask yourself a Why question. |
Their regular cakes are not too sweet though. The icing is also not so sugary sweet. |
Nah. I think the whole point was to have a venue to brag that she was able to make it a year without feeding her kid sugar. There is no reward for this so you just have to find a way to announce it. I would also like to use this thread to make an announcement myself. I am a few days shy of going a whole year without wearing underwear. But does anyone know where I can get some sort of garment to wear between my jeans and my naked body that isn't underwear? Bonus if it's made of organic cotton. |
And if she is that concerned about what they are eating, it's best to DIY. |
| You know a 1 year old will take maybe 7 bites and then just want to run around, right? Make a cake with sugar, dish Out the cake around 4 and he will be fine. |
| Anyone selling a sugar free cake is probably making one with artificial sweetener which sounds nasty. Honestly, letting everyone else eat real cake? Don't do that to your kid- let him have a little sugar. It's not black tar heroin. |
| Neither of my kids liked overly sweet stuff anyway. My son tasted the frosting and gagged, and went back to eating his fruit. Daughter did the same thing (but she cried when she saw her hands were dirty from the icing). Don't overthink it. If he doesn't like it, get the photo op with the cake (it's just really to play with, put their fingers in the frosting, get it on their face), and then let him eat what he likes. Something healthy. |
