Private & Independent Schools
I was wondering the same thing when I read the OP's post I hope the OP responds.

I'm the OP.
Sorry to dsiappoint but it isn't Beauvoir. And, to be perfectly honest, our reasons probably aren't compelling enough for the school to just let us walk away. But it's a very good school and I know (from this forum) that there's a waitlist of qualified students. We'll probably just stick it out for a year and then transfer before kindergarten. What I don't want is to ask to be released from the contract, be told no, and then have my daughter regarded as "the kid who is going to leave at the end of the year" by teachers. I want her to get the full investment of time and attention from the school. |

OP again -- sorry, I forgot to thank you for the feedback. It confirmed what I thought. Damn.

Even with the current situation at Beauvoir it seems as if you were hoping for a spot PP? |
It doesn't hurt to ask the school if it's possible to find a replacement. For Pre-K, the school may be able to find a family who is not locked into another school that costs so much. If you plan to apply out for K, you will need to get recommendations from your current school in the Fall anyway so the school will know early on that you plan to leave. |
| OP to 21:57 PP: Thanks -- good point. |
| OP, can you drop a broad general hint about what is making you want to switch schools? |
| OP here. Not a big secret. We just found a bigger house that we'd like to buy and the commute to the school would be an issue. And we want our daughter to have school friends who live nearby. We haven't put an offer on the house yet. Trying to decide in the next few days whether we sacrifice the school or the house. |
| Just some advice, don't let any school have that much influence, get the house. Most children are happy in any school. |
Maybe the house could wait one year so as to not lose one year's tuition. It would not be the exact same house next year, obviously, but I don't think this housing market is predicted to turn around soon so another house in the same general area for the same general price ought to be available in a year. Plus you get to put off the chore of moving!!

Thanks for all the good advice. We really did take your opinions into consideration!
Thought that I should post the outcome of our ponderings on this. We decided to stay in the school (DH is enamored with the place) and to postpone the move. I agree with the last poster that we'll find another house in a year and we won't have to waste tuition this way. And we avoid the problem of having to get into a new school off a very late application. Do wish we had found the house a few months earlier! |
