A shoe in the middle of the road...

When my son was about 4, we were waiting for a bus on 16th street at rush hour, and he went to kick at a snowbank, sending his show flying into the middle of the street. At that point I didn't have enough money in my pocket for a taxi, so I figured my choices were, 1) wade out into busy rush hour traffic, hoping no one hit me while I was bent over to pick up the shoe, and that my preschooler didn't follow me or disappear from the bus stop or something or 2) Go home with 1 shoe -- we had about a 3/4 mile walk from the bus stop, and it was snowing. I chose the former, but if the weather had been nice that $10 payless shoe would have been left without hesitation.

I always wonder about the random adult, male underwear. 9/10 it's tighty whiteys and on the shoulder of a major road. How does this happen?

Where is this happening? I never see this.

I guess none of you read Dear Mr Crenshaw by Beverly Cleary when you were a kid - this is a storyline in the book (probably written in the 1980s)!

OP here. It is all over the western part of Ffx Co. I've seen these lonely shoes in Chantilly, Centreville, Fairfax. It's just weird that it is so often.

HOw do the shoes get along the side of the highway? I've seen this ever since I can remember as a kid, and I've always wondered what happened to the other one? Why only one? Why on the highway?

I have seen the shoes and underwear on the side of the road as long as I can remember. Shoes are more frequent than underwear but still.

I work in Columbia Heights, DC. I see these things over and over on the road or sidewalk:

-loose clumps of hair weave
-chicken bones
-empty "Mad Dog" or other such rotgut liquor bottles
-single shoes

Combined together these constitute evidence of the best/worst night ever. Yuck.

Newsflash: There are no more random shoes out there than there are random kinds of other trash -- kleenex, paper cups, straws, etc. In fact, there are probably much fewer shoes. It's just that shoes take longer to break down because they are either leather or they are "man made materials." Shoes are recognizable a lot longer.

I like to think it's this one. Also, once, a friend who lived in Baltimore took a picture of the street after someone had gotten hit by a car in front of his house. There was one shoe left in the road. So now I always assume someone got hit by a car and in the confusion, a shoe was lost. It's more interesting than someone just losing their shoe while they were loading their child into the car.

I'm going to go with the garbage pick-up incidents (i.e. shoe falls out of garbage can while workers are loading garbage into truck).
