Barbie Moms?

If she has the wrong impression you could explain why in a polite way in some detail. If there are schools with a lot of parents who are superficial who run the place, and who make others uncomfortable, share that. After all, that is her specific question. Perahps she should elaborate, although I think her question about dominant culture at schools is pretty clear and a very fair question from her perspective. She should not have used the term "Barbie." But I think it's a question worth answering for her and the pp should move beyond the unfortunate use of that loaded word.

She also implied she was too "busy" to really do much research into this critical decision. Throwing out negative stereotypes didn't help.

I think she should go and visit the schools and decide for herself. I think she'll have a hard time getting her child into ANY school with her attitude though.

OP, the bottom line is that you and your very busy professional husband are going to have to do what all of us, with our own very busy lives, have had to do: visit schools, talk to students/ parents/ teachers, read background information and make your own choice. You have to put in the time and do the research. To form an opinion on private versus public schools for your kids based only on a few posts from a few parents on one web site, is crazy. We're all busy -- SAH and working parents alike. Raising kids takes a lot of time, in case you hadn't noticed yet.

Exactly. Good post. And OP: when you visit, you might want to refrain from telling everyone what a "busy professional" you are - and from calling people Barbie.

Ouch. You really touched 11:19 & 11:20's nerves. Go girl. You've got the Barbies on the run. They answered one of your questions - do they run the schools? They just told you that your class, busy working moms, won't be admitted to their school. If you tell the truth, you are a" busy professional," you have no business playing in their sandbox. Are they speed dialing the admissions offices as I write?

Move to MC. Unlike 11:19, no one out here will ignorantly criticize you for daring to call yourself a BUSY PROFESSIONAL. That’s what we all are. That’s how we afford the shacks that 11:19 turns her surgically enhanced nose up at while swilling vino over lunch to forget she has nothing much to do. Except criticize women who are stuck being busy professionals in order to give their kids a decent life.

Please don't sock puppet the threads. Its pretty amusing to see you pat yourself on the back, but there is enough controversy on this board without someone intentionally stirring it up.

12:18 and 12:59 are both the OP. There's a couple more posts as well. This sort of thing is not uncommon and as long as the poster ceases such behavior, its not a big deal.

Wow, that's funny--I guess she's not that busy after all.

Thanks J Steele, I always wondered if some posters do that. Thanks for calling her on it.

I don't understand the intent of OP/12:18/12:59. Did she want information or not? Did she merely want to put down "Barbie Moms" (who apparently are all SAHMs)? Why the sock puppetry? I'm so confused. . . .

I think she was just trying to tweak some of the other posters. I've seen better efforts. Basically harmless given the worst she called anyone was "Barbie". That may register more significantly with some, but I'd think most DCUM members could brush it off.

17:15 here. Thanks, Jeff, for the clarification. I'm one of the moms she was referring to, probably, but "Barbie" doesn't describe me well. Alas, I have neither the hair nor the bustline for it.

I am not sure what a "Barbie Mom" is....but I am definately a MILF.
