A different perspective on catholic schools:
I have been protestant all my life, but went to a catholic school in middle and high school. The academics were very good (I went to a school which US News always ranks #1,2, or 3) and it was a great choice for me, though I didn't think so at the time. I was excused from confession, confirmation classes, etc. . . and it was useful and interesting to read the bible and learn about one of the great religions of history, even though it wasn't my own. I never felt odd for being protestant - there were muslims and Jews and a hindu at my school and I don't think they felt out of place either. However, my school had a fairly high percentage of non catholics (probably about 10%) and I am led to understand that Visitation, athough academically strong, is much more homogenous in that way. For that reason, I do not plan to explore that option for my daughters. |
