Not at all. He already has a job lined up. It was well planned.

He knew for awhile a new mayor meant he would be fired. At the debate all three candidates said they would not keep him. The chancellor is essentially a political appointee.

Whether he was good or bad, he wasn’t either, he was steady. Second longest serving chancellor after what three in three years? Mayor needed someone who would follow orders and be steady and controversy free. Nothing he did was particularly remarkable, good or bad. He wasn’t inspiring or controversial. He just…was.

Meh = bad. DCPS has real challenges. We needed someone courageous and capable, not milquetoast.

Being insipid enough to not get fired is not at win.

But the failure is really Bowser's. She chose not to hire a someone excellent, but instead simply wanted yes men, with the additional requirement that they be black males.

Meh doesn’t necessarily mean bad. We could get a leader who comes in like a bull in a china shop and makes things worse. Cleans house without knowing what works, brings in new programs, drops tons of new initiatives all at once. Stability is also important. I’m not a Ferebee fan but also don’t think he was awful.

Sure. But "could be worse" isn't a strategy of success.

Ferebee has made plenty of bad choices even with time to analyze first. (Amplify, anyone?) And he has failed to even make modest changes to things that are steadily and visibly worsening over time (eg, DCIAA).

He's really good about putting up new across-the-board barriers every time a problem arises, but not good at finding thoughtful, nuanced solutions. The list of these examples is long -- the ridiculous and very unreliable bus vendor situation, the overly drawn-out process for getting approval for out of state travel, bouncy, houses, etc., etc.

The absurd drop in suspensions was under him. 50s for work not turned in, and 63s for work with just a name on it were under him. Going from 20 absences to 30 before failing was under him. Common lit, amplify, and testing kids every two seconds in English and math were him. Good riddance.

Please explain what is wrong with him being a qualified black male. Why are you people so bothered by DCPS being led by someone who looks like the majority of the kids enrolled? What is wrong with having someone who understands the culture of the majority of students enrolled? I highly doubt that someone from Wyoming would understand the culture of black students.

I think it’s just a non-controversial end of a tenure. He was in the job for almost eight years, so a solid run, and is presumably timing his departure to the mayoral election. There’s just not much to discuss as compared to the mess from the mid-2010s.

He definitely saw the writing on the wall and was already ready to go but just waiting for the right time to announce it.

Absolutely nothing wrong with being a qualified black male. But having the chief chancellor job requirements as (1) yes man (or yes person) and (2) black male is not ideal.

Point 1 should be a disqualification, and Point 2 is a nice-to-have, but I'd like to see research that black male as opposed to white man, black female, etc, makes meaningful difference in educational outcomes and life success.

Also, I don't know what your definition of "qualified" is, but for a top position, it should mean a lot more than simply having a degree in something.

The person who gets a top job like that should be *exceptionally* qualified, not just qualified.

The definition of qualified is having the necessary skills, degree, and relevant experience to do the job. Dr. Ferebee has a doctorate in educational leadership, served as a superintendent of schools in another major city, and was a principal before that. He is exceptionally qualified.

I see nothing wrong with him waiting for her to get subpoenas to support her fishing expedition.

What you said makes him qualified. If he were exceptionally qualified, you would see exceptional, not ho-hum, results.

I'm doubt it's legal to do anything else. He can't just pass around student data.
Anonymous
Did occur to you that maybe he just wanted to do something else? People do get tired of their jobs and want a change. The amount of mental gymnastics that people do to diminish the qualifications of black professionals is exhausting.
Anonymous
What's his new job?

Also can we all be louder about Amplify or are we stuck with it?
