I agree with the recommendation to try and find a camp this summer that can help teach him the basics. If he has at least a little instruction on hitting and fielding, that will help. Pinkman, MVP, and other places have baseball camps. You might even find something through your county parks and rec centers (I don't know what Loudoun offers but it's worth checking). I'm sure some YouTube videos can help, but he really needs to get a feel for how to swing, catch, throw, etc. which is best learned from someone who knows what they're doing. Then you can help him by having a catch in the backyard on a regular basis.
Fall ball is generally more relaxed so it's a good time to start little league if you're a beginner. One of the posters mentioned above and I would absolutely recommend this: start in the lowest level that you can for his age (probably would be AAA). At the Majors level in LL, many of the older kids have been playing for years and a 12 year old may be pitching at 50-55 mph, which can be intimidating for a new player. In my experience, LL is an encouraging environment where the kids cheer on their teammates, even if they aren't very good. Older kids who are new will absolutely stick out but that doesn't mean they can't learn and have fun. At age 10 there tends to be a wide range of abilities and that's ok. |
