St. James has armed guards?

Armed guards make you feel unsafe?

You should feel just the opposite.

Faux outrage anyway.

They weren't there for safety, OP. They were just making sure the private tourney organizers get their fees.

+1. The only time TSJ has legit security (either guards or checking people in at the entrance) at the facility is when there's an entrance fee to be collected. They do not care about safety and security otherwise.

Interesting. I didn’t see this last year for volleyball tournaments and there was a fee to watch my kid. But it was their tournament and not a private tournament.

It’s not St James. It’s whoever rents the gym and is running the tournaments. They are trying to make money so they charge admission into the gym. However, I don’t see how they can stop someone who is watching from outside of the gym from looking through a window. I may have had to challenge security attempting to stop me from looking through a window

Yes, very much so. If it's the type of situation or environment where there is a need for armed civilians to respond to events, I feel very unsafe. This is a childrens' event.

I belong to a country club - it is a private, exclusive space. I would similarly feel uneasy if my club started hosting events that made it necessary to have people walking around with sidearms. This isn't a cop on a street corner - keep the events more selective and keep a level of civility in your facility.

There are very often armed guards at basketball tournaments. I'm trying to remember if we see them at the girls only events, but I don't recall. I know we see them at coed tournaments.

There is nothing exclusive or private about the St James so your analogy doesn't make sense.

The basketball tourney organizers are 100% concerned with people paying and think "armed security" will prevent scofflaws. No one is unsafe at a kids basketball game.

It's a private facility. They can choose not to rent to people for any reason. This isnt a city or county facility. That's the very definition of a private facility. Just like you don't have to rent out a room in your house if you don't want to.

Its a private commercial facility trying to make as much money as possible. Open to the public as long as you pay whatever fee they are charging. Which is very different from a country club.

I'm more concerned about how they over book and rent out to too many groups at once resulting in no parking at all. Every inch of grass this morning is covered by a truck...
