We used to live in one of the few single family neighborhoods zoned for Dogwood. Not a single family went to Dogwood - mainly St. Joes or pupil place into Fox Mill (Japanese immersion program in 1st grade) OR Hunters Woods (Magnet lottery in kinder). We ended up deciding to move as we hated paying so much in taxes to be zoned for a low performing school.
Hughes and South Lakes are fine - they are IB which may people do not like. Have a higher FARMS rate because of schools like Dogwood and Lake Anne, etc that feed into them. |
Polo Fields neighborhood? |
| I’m throwing in my vote for Terraset. I love that school. Had one graduate last year from SLHS. Totally fine education wise. Not everyone’s cup of tea though. |
Could be Freetown Dr or Stratton Woods. |
Stratton Woods and Polo Fields are the same thing. OP- Unless your child needs ESL services I would not send them to Dogwood. You have a few other options that someone mentioned above if you choose to buy a house there. Honestly unless you have to be in that location I’d push a smidge further out. |
+1 Great school |
| Some Dogwood families apply for the Japanese Immersion program at Fox Mill. It is not that long of a commute and allows the kids to attend Fox Mill then Carson MS. Dogwood and Fox Mill currently share the same HS, who knows what will happen after the western Boundaries are drawn. I know some of the Dogwood families have bus exceptions that allow them to be dropped off at a bus stop in the Fox Mill area for MS. |
20171 is a dual location zip code. https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?citybyzipcode Look up in this link and you'll see 20171 is labeled Herndon and Oak Hill. North 20171 is close to Herndon and could be called Herndon (but not in the town of Herndon), but south and east 20171 really doesn't have any landmark and can be called Oak Hill or Herndon by choice. There are many dual location zip code, that's why there are places called Falls Church, Vienna, Alexandria that are very far from those downtown areas. It is because the zip code covers a small portion of those towns while 90% of the zip code does not. |
Stratton Woods and Polo Fields are not the same. I lived in Stratton Woods, which was not part of Reston Association and had its own HOA. |
+1 I live in Polo Fields and it's not the same. It looks like it is because they named the park by Polo Fields Stratton Woods Park. That's because it's a county park and Stratton Woods isn't part of Reston Association. Also, Stratton Woods has one street of houses built by Ryan Homes bordering the parkway that are the same models as in Polo Fields, so it makes it look like one big cohesive neighborhood. The rest of Stratton Woods is a different builder with different looking houses. |
Stratton Woods is east of Fairfax County pkwy. Polo Fields is west. |

+2 Fantastic school and culture |
Eek. Wouldn’t choose it. Feeds into Langston Hughes and SLHS. No thanks! |
