The effect is we have to decide between missing learning and scrambling to make up assignments when we take our holiday or not having our holiday. That’s effectively systemic discrimination.

What MCPS is learning is there is no reasonable way to close for every religious holiday and account for snow and still close by a reasonable date in the summer. I’m all for striking all — Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu — holidays from the calendar all together. Give a few days at the end of each term and be done with it…

I just hope whatever day they use as make up is a half day. We have enough hours, no sense in making it a full day!

I'm all for the PD day being a half day make up day. Those PD's are no good. The county assigns one pd for everyone no matter grade or content; it's ridiculous. We should take notes from other counties and make a PD day that has each content and level meeting together for specific PD!

State law requires schools close on Christian holidays and on the days adjacent to Christian holidays.

Listen, March 20 is not my holiday either. But when you decide to hold school on these holidays, not only do the kids who celebrate have an impossible choice between missing instruction and the complexity of having to make it up, juggling studying and hw with religious and family obligations, and extracurricular activities not allowing absence without consequence (sports coaches are notorious for this). Honestly it probably doesn’t matter for ES & MS, but for HS it can be tricky. I am not sure whether a half day would properly allow those who celebrate to do so, but if it would, I think that would be a good compromise.
