Horace Mann vs Riverdale?

I am asking this because I know someone who got 100% correct in FLI and first-choice'd HM but did not get in. I know FLI is just one piece of the puzzle but then was wondering if anyone who sent HM first choice letter was just like a in a black box.

The same thing happened to us. 100% correct on FLI and dinged at HM & Riverdale. We weren't at a connected preschool (moving from out of state), so found it very difficult to navigate the system without any guidance or feedback.

This is years ago. DD got in HM K. She did not get a perfect score on FLI. We came from public so we did not have any feedback. We really did not know the process but knew schools like first choice letters. We sent our first choice letter to HM. We were lucky.

About a year later, my friend’s DS who was from a connected preschool also had question about lack of feedback from HM and whether she should first choice it despite not having feedback. According to her, PSD told her HM told everyone that they are not giving feedback. PSD encouraged her to go with the school that her school feeds into because she got a great feedback. She went with a safe choice.

But that same year, a parent from the same preschool as my friend spoke with PSD as to whether she should send a first choice letter to a different TT (not HM) and PSD said she got a good feedback so was encouraged to go for it. She did but did not get in to that TT.

I am guessing sometimes feedback or PSD’s guidance is not a guarantee. If your preschool is a feeder to a school, then that is “almost” guaranteed but if not, everything is very fluid.

Agree with this. Know people that got good feedback (like basically you're in) at Brearley and Trinity and came up empty handed at time of admissions. Ended up at a hill school

I heard same situation from people for Trinity last year.

Any explanations as to why this happened? So these people presumably didn't have time to direct a first choice letter somewhere else?

No explanation but couple days before decision they got to know someone else took their spot... eventually their PSD worked out another TT school for them at the last minute.. but obviously not a great experience..

are there any other data points of people who were accepted at either Riverdale or HM and what their FLI score is? our kid got close to perfect score but not sure if that’s worth doing the first choice letter for if they want perfect

did you actually hear feedback though? I thought both of these schools don’t do it as a policy

No. we are applying from unconnected. Public school specifically which we are now hearing makes us “interesting” so fingers crossed

They are not looking for a perfect score. At least, I know HM does not. My kid did not get a perfect score but was in the high range. We got in K. I think how your child does playgroup weighs more than FLI. We also sent first choice letter to HM. This is years ago.

We submitted a first-choice letter, had a perfect FLI score, and did not get in. Since we applied during Covid, there was no playdate. We were not at a connected preschool, so never got any feedback.
