Delaware Beaches - can I please have the lowdown?

Anonymous
South Bethany has an uncrowded beach. If your kids and friends are active/outdoorsy you could check out the houses to rent on the canal (west) side of South Bethany. You can rent kayaks for the week and explore the bay and canals. Quick bike ride to the beach. Not much walkable though except Grotto Pizza!

Dewey is drunk singles. 20-somethings piled into group houses.

Lewes and Bethany are pretty dead. Not much town life. No boardwalk.

With what you describe, I'd pick Rehoboth.

Bethany has a boardwalk.

No it has a block.

Bethany is gross. OP do Rehoboth

I feel like the people recommending Bethany don’t have older teens. There’s nothing to do at night there.

It's generally still a lot less crowded in the summer, you can go to a paid to park beach like Fenwick Island beach 8 minutes away or the Big Chill Beach Club. Bethany beach and boardwalk is between these two places.

Bethany is a dump.
Restaurants aren't good except maybe one or two.

We used to have a house there sold it moved to Rehoboth.

Rehoboth ( for the love of God learn how it’s spelled)
Far more walkable than the other 2.
There is also a bike trail that goes from Rehoboth to Lewes if you/teens like bike riding.

Bethany was eroding rapidly a few years ago

I'd rent a house. There are a couple of companies that do the bulk of the rentals. Just google chincoteague rentals and they will pop up.

Depending on what you want - in town and walk to ice cream and shops, or further out of town and bike or drive to ice cream and shops - you'll have a bunch of options. Generally older houses the locals used to live in before it got to expensive and everything turned into rentals. There are newer more modern places, there are hotels, and there are some cottages but I've only ever done house rentals in town.

If you want walkable, then you need to stay near the action.

As a lifelong Marylander who has visited the local beaches 2-6 times a year for the last 50+ years, I feel equipped to weigh in here.

If you are taking tweens/teens and want them to be able to walk to Minigolf, restaurants, shops, whatever without having to drive them, then you should stay in North Ocean City in a low-rise condo within walking distance of the Fenwick border OR in the first handful of blocks in Fenwick (noting it will be more expensive than OC).

^^^
This is the sweet spot in terms of less crowded, wide beaches within walking distance of activities. (Google Fenwick boardwalk)

Sadly, Bethany proper has been destroyed; the beach is gone and it’s way too crowded. Sea Colony in Bethany is okay, but it’s crowded. The perk is you can walk to the boardwalk which is quaint. Parking in the summer is awful and the beach in front of the boardwalk is literally shoulder to shoulder seating. (It’s awesome off season though.)

Dewey smells like beer and vomit. Sorry not sorry.

Rehoboth will leave you fighting for parking, sitting in traffic, and stuck on a crowded beach. We still venture to the boardwalk one night whenever we head to the beach for a week, but we stopped staying there 20 years ago.

Note: if you have deep pockets and can afford to stay in a gated community or fancy enclave of houses in any of the DE beaches, go for it. The beaches are lovely and uncrowded…but you can’t really walk anywhere.

Lewes is on the bay. The public beach in town is ridiculously crowded and parking is a nightmare. Plus, the only amenity is a Dairy Queen. The actual Main Street area inland is very charming and worth a day trip.

PS - While we still love the local beaches for nostalgic reasons and visit each year (throughout the year, including day trips), the crowds and obscene rental costs have prompted us to schlep to other beaches. I’ve decided I just don’t like crowds on the beach anymore.

Rehoboth is trashy. Bethany is the nicest of the three beaches mentioned.

Super wide uncrowded beaches where you can actually star gaze because dark at night. Almost empty to walk mornings and evenings.
A 5 minute drive or bike to VB restaurants/ nightlife/ attractions. Very nice Virginia Aquarium 15 minutes south.

No thank you. The noise from the military planes and jets flying over the beach all day long is maddening.

It is also dead quiet at night at North End because there is really just one road that goes thru very small neighborhoods.
You have 1st Landing state Park to the west, ocean to the east with a small strip of houses in the middle.
At night you just hear ocean once over the crossover.
