If the near-term goal is to get out of USDA, focus on that now. It is easiest to lateral in the same job category that you hold right now.

Depending on your job and educational background, look at 1560 data scientist jobs in addition to your current series.

Look into NIST (Gaithersburg) and into ARL (at Adelphi).

Thanks. At this point, I’m leaning toward looking for opportunities in Northern Virginia or DC for commuting reasons. I don’t want to risk regretting the transition if my current agency ultimately stays in DC, because I really like the agency. I know Maryland isn’t far, and I’ll definitely expand my search to include Maryland if— and only if— relocation becomes highly likely.

Actually, I’ve applied to several positions at the same grade level, but I haven’t had any success so far.

I’ve been thinking… maybe the IT field might be a bit easier to transition into. If the relocation actually happens, I’m open to trying anything and looking anywhere in the DC metro area.
