My kid is already having to do this with their peers when asked about where they're applying. (I'm not a stranger to it myself, especially working in one of those fields that looks down their nose at people who didn't go to an "elite" school. I used to joke that I had no idea I didn't go to a good school until I moved up here and started getting, "Oh, you went to State Land Grant." like it was something stuck in their shoe.) I want to find a place that is a good fit for them and has a strong program, regardless of overall university ranking. I am lucky that my kid doesn't really care and thinks it's pretentious. I do think it hurt just a little bit when one of their good friends told them they were "better than" VCU or WVU, but they're good enough friends be able to tell them to knock that off and explain that they're looking at only FEPAC-accredited schools, of which there are about only about 30 in the US and Canada. |
