Can’t you just google this yourself — and leave us alone? You seem lazy. |
Do you really think Google would have a useful answer to the search query, “are people on DCUM too lazy to use Google?” OP’s question is a discussion-based one appropriate to a forum, not a one-shot simply fact question appropriate for Google. |
I just googled it, and they do! The idea that people on community forums like DCUM (DC Urban Moms and Dads) often ask questions that could be easily answered by a Google search is a common perception shared across many online communities. Reasons and perspectives on this phenomenon include: Desire for interaction: Some users prefer the human element of conversation and interaction over a simple search result. Seeking specific or nuanced advice: Users may be looking for personal experiences, local recommendations (e.g., a specific yoga class, a trusted housekeeper), or up-to-date, real-time information that might not be easily verifiable through a general search. Varying information sources: With multiple websites, GPS apps, and storefronts sometimes listing different information (like store hours), asking a community can be a way to find a consensus or a confirmed answer. Community culture: Forums often develop their own culture, and asking questions is part of engaging with that specific group, even if the information is available elsewhere. Perception of the forum: DCUM is known as an active platform for discussions, and the quality of discussions can vary, leading some to perceive a lack of motivation for self-research among certain users. Ultimately, the motivation behind these posts is generally seen as a mix of seeking efficiency, validation, interaction, and community-specific insights, rather than universal "laziness". |

Think of this forum as- you are sitting with friends at brunch and you are wondering about something and you want to know what they have to say, because you know they have some experience with it.
I only have a problem with the very specific Google-able questions that will only require someone else to Google it for you. But IMO that is rare. |
Spectacular! |
| Too lazy or just too stupid to know how to get the answer to a question themselves. |
Exactly |
Google censors 99% of the clear web internet and is horrible for getting facts and a diverse set of answers. Avoid it. |
Wait, it's gone up? It was only M+JS, wasn't it?? |
Yes why so many of these lately? And the even worse one, How do I know if medicine is right for my kid? Then they get the answers and advice and reply with That's too hard, That's not fair, it should be easier. Are you joking parents, your kid should be looking all of this up (if they have not then newsflash they are not getting in) and it is not your job to determine if it is a good career fit for them. That is what they figure out. |
