Memphis already has 6 girls in the portal and they are playing in the NCAA tournament.

So are the players in portal ones that are bench players at their school and hoping to be picked up to be starters? Do coaches know if a player goes to portal- assume they have to, but what happens if player goes to portal and doesn’t transfer somewhere- can coach at existing school drop them? Or are ones on portals the ones going to be dropped anyway?

Yes coaches know which of their players are in the portal. Most are ones going to be dropped anyway. Remember there are 8-10 players on every team that never see the playing field. Portal gives then a second chance. About 1/3 or players in the portal will not get picked up and their career is probably over.

There are also players in the transfer portal that are looking to jump up and level.

Quiet, you are messing up their narrative (P2P is terrible, this area does not produce any talent because the coaching stinks, they will not go pro or college, if they do get accepted it is not with a scholarship and only with a big donation from dad, they will get no playing time, will enter the portal and not get offers, their career is over, and all that money into P2P was a waste). Did I miss anything?

Just listened too a College Soccer coaching podcast specifically on the portal transfers. The consensus among many coaches is that they will not take a lower level player unless they have great stats, solid minutes, and even all conference honors. Players who did not have much playtime or decent stats do not have al eg to stand on when trying to jump up a level.

You needed a podcast to tell you that? Sounds like common sense.

Apparently there are over 1000 girls in the portal going into December.

The transfer portal is a money grab.

In US soccer, what is NOT a money grab?

You literally have no way of honestly knowing this.

Why do you say that? If this person is friends with a college coach, they may well know.

There are 300+ D1 programs plus the portal includes D2 players. 1000+ is 2-3 per program…That doesn’t seem too surprising.

It was reported that this year the portal had the lowest number of players in 4 years!! I think the new roster size limit is working !!

This! Our DDs coach mentioned this too.

I got cut from a college soccer team my sophomore year, long before the transfer portal. I literally thought I was the only person this ever happened to. I guess it has always been this way. Glad to know it’s not just me! (Stayed at the same school and loved my last three years - there is life after soccer.)
