It’s truly ridiculous and also contributes to the decline in basic social skills. People are so afraid to say anything to anyone anymore.

People should be afraid to say racist insults that make others miserable, even those that they didnt think were "that bad". That said, the comment about light in this case was not referring to race. Some kids have a lot of light, no matter skin color.

Black person here, and this is stupid. I saw the subject and immediately assumed it was a post about "lightness of spirit" or something. Even if the coworker meant complexon, that's nothing to get remotely upset about.

Not racist. It’s a lovely compliment.

+3 I interpreted this as a reference to the child's inner light, which is an important concept in the Quaker religion, and is understood to be divine and good. How sad that somebody would interpret this statement as racist.

Inner light is an ages-old compliment. “This little light of mine” “candle in the wind”. “Light of my life” — these songs are decades old and extremely popular. Not racist.

Oh, and the classic halo is inner light!

I'm with you, OP.

If questioned, you can just say the truth: that you believe he did not mean anything of a racist nature.

Sorry for inserting autism into the conversation, but my husband and son are on the spectrum. I've had to talk to both several times to make sure they understand the import of certain remarks. Some people just don't have great socio-emotional sensitivity and need explicit instruction in certain explosive areas of language.

+1 I agree, but modern times have gotten absurd. Reporting that comment to HR? Ridiculous.

I'm with you, OP. That's definitely not wording I'd use to describe someone who looked more white than their other race.

-POC mom with biracial kids.

Better to be safe than sorry. Report everything.

I’m betting the person who reported him isn’t full of light. Probably got those flat, shark eyes.

+1 It's probably his go-to compliment for any kid.

Mine for babies is "She looks so alert!"
because parents love it that their babies are bundles of learning neurons.
If someone took that wrong then I don't know what I'd do.
