+1 That is the problem. An emotional problem. Only two groups will have logistical issues after the change: 1) USYNT, 2) MLS Next teams playing international competition (if they change to SY). They probably make up .001% of the US soccer population and England has the same system so I imagine we will learn from them. Otherwise, this is the Y2K phenomenon all over again. A bunch of hoopla and then nothing happens when it actually goes down. |

My kids MLSN club has not said a word about it. Coach has not said anything either and I don't think he would have any info beyond what you might read here.
Kid is a Sept birthday and a starter. He is thinking about not playing MLSN next year, he sort of wants to give HS a try (he would be the absolute star of the team) so I get it... Our local USYS club (we are still on the email list) just sent out an email about the age change with a few links to other clubs' age change info to help explain it. They are a small club but said, in the email, that they will be re-forming all teams under the new age brackets with no exceptions which is interesting. Because of the size of the club I expected them to hem and haw and talk a lot about exceptions and keeping teams together. But nope... |

We've talked about it, we are in the MLSN boat so unclear what will happen/if it will happen. At this point, since we aren't playing to go pro or get a D1 scholarship it's not super welcome as we just switched teams this year and are pretty happy with it as is.
From our perspective best would be no change, followed by change and staying on the existing team (playing up, which we do realize is a stretch), then playing on a new team at the club. Club is mum about it, which I get, all they have in the older age groups are MLSN and MLSN2 teams, why invite drama until it's final. If there were no change in MLSN, for some kids, the best play might be hopping to ECNL to get playtime/move up. We aren't interested. |
Why they won’t be happy? This is about can you compete or not. a trapped player is just few months older than the year player. So they are same age technically . So everyone stop whining. This is not a daycare. |
Small clubs always make exceptions behind the scenes. They can't fill rosters otherwise esp on the girls side. |
I'm truly trying to understand what would make parents unhappy about this? Is it just that some people are unhappy about any changes to their life in general? Otherwise it's hard to see how changing the age cutoff date by 4 months is going to be a big deal. It doesn't make anyone a better soccer player. Help me understand. |
5 months of players from the older age group will come down. Some kids will be bumped down to a lower team or no longer get playing time. This isn't that difficult to understand. |
If your player is a “trap year” player but can still compete at a high level with the current team, then not much will change. However, remember that older trap-year players who move down to their respective SY (school year) groups will add more competition. At the end of the day, every kid—whether SY or BY (birth year), whatever you want to call it—is competing. Positions aren’t given; they’re earned. Teams don’t care what grade your child is in—they care about performance and fit. |
How will a kid who was good enough to play on a U14 first team then get bumped to a U13 second team? Or not get playing time on the younger team when they played for the older team? that doesn't make sense. |
| Kids get bumped and moved after tryouts all the time. It really is no different than any other year. Shrug. |
Do you just imagine things. The U13 kids are the ones that will be bumped down when the current U14's are realigned. |
trap stars can no longer market playing up. May come down to worse teams/coaches and kids may actually like playing w each other |
| I have a younger 09 player in a ECNL club, coaches already talked to us and gave us their recommendation. We have the option to play u17 again next year, but they suggested he play with the older U19 team next year. |
| Current U13 ECNL girls club with a Q4 starter. They will do anything to win, so we expect to go the new age group and "repeat" U13 again, but absolutely no communication from the club or coach so far. |
| I have a Q4 starter at an ECNL club as well. I have talked to the coaches for both age groups and neither one know what team my kid will be on. I'm sure it will probably depend who all comes to tryouts from other clubs. We are in a good situation because i know they will be on one of the NL teams. I expect 40-60% of the players will change for the non high school ages and probably less for older ages. I unfortunately think a lot of the Jan-July kid's parents have no idea or in denial about what is about to happen. |
