Naviance Data Seems Confusing and Discouraging

Schools can only accept so many kids from TJ. This is why a kid can be accepted to UVA or VT from McLean High School but not from TJ with the exact same stats.

NP: did you click on the checkmark to actually see the GPA? It’s definitely not a 4.9

NP: similar at our school's Naviance. So many 4.0s. We're a private school where teachers talk openly about not giving out As, or only give out a handful per class. So how are these kids getting only As for 4 years straight without even a single A-?

The data is discouraging- I think for many parents though they have heard the horror stories until they go through it with their first one they just don't really believe it.

A few things to be aware of with the Naviance data. The GPA show is the final GPA of the prior applicants, it may have been higher or lower at the point of application. It provides no info on trajectory, some of the high stats kids not admitted had their better grades in 9th/10th and fell down a bit in 11th. Reverse is true when you see admission for slightly lower GPA, possible that the lower grades were all in 9th grade.
In addition many colleges recalculate GPA (don't include 9th grade, don't count non academic classes etc) Naviance data is especially useless for these colleges

NP: My kid is also at TJ, and I'm staring at the Naviance plot for VT right now. I'm not going to count all of the green checks, but I'd estimate that the acceptance rate is at least 95% for those with (final) GPAs over about 4.3, with little obvious correlation to test scores, and there are plenty of acceptances with lower GPAs. That looks pretty "safe" to me for at least half of the kids who applied there from TJ. I'm actually feeling more relaxed about my kid's chances now.

Exactly. Some parents (and kids) simply refuse to admit this truth and pull out the usual "yield protection" canard to save face.

100% this. Naviance is extremely misleading for those reasons ^^

I think one of the worst features of FCPS’ Naviance/Scattergrams is as of now you can’t tell if the kid applied TO or not. I also don’t think it has the years (but is a combination of the last two years).
