Will the Board of Education say no to the regional programs initiative as currently conceived?

- Why are academic criteria based magnet programs bring proposed at high income schools? Will this not increase segregation?
- Without increased resources, what happens when programs fail? This will be most likely in the high poverty schools, so will we be left with a system that has some nice programs at high income schools and low income schools losing high achieving students and staff?

I didn't expect much from MCPS but to have the Superintendent propose this and the BOE fall in line like it is doing falls well below my very low expectations.

Right. Laura saying they need to hear directly from families is insane given how much they have already heard from families already.

It's her deflection response. What I want to know from Laura is this: how will you vote on the regional programs? What are you advising your colleagues with regard to the regional programs?

I think it's her way of saying "most of my colleagues don't agree, maybe if you email more they'll change their mind."

Yes, because minds have been changed and shifted based on emails. BOE members tune out email. Based on the voluminous public testimonies at the BOE already, and two community organizations (MCCPTA and MCEA), they know there's intense and real dissatisfaction with the program proposal and how it has been developed.

At least last week Julie Yang still said she would vote yes although she personally dislike the regional model. She hinted there was some negotiation deal made behind the curtain. - secondhand information.

Do you mean a negotiation made behind the scenes to get her/other BOE members to support it? Or that there are negotiations going on to try to get it delayed without them having to vote no on it?

I don't know. She was apparently not wanting to reveal any details, and the hint was vague to certain degree. Don't interpret too much. She was very clear that she didn't like the model but wouldn't vote against it if someone insists.

That's depressing to hear that Yang, who knows better, is voting yes. Not the kind of leader I want on the county council.

Taylor has zero interest in delaying his regional program initiative. His minions are busy gaslighting about the inequity of delay.

Taylor claimed the other way around. He wanted to slow down but BOE forced him to roll out together with boundary study. Who is the “sus”? Or they are all cowards and now try to point fingers to others now?

Where are people making stuff up? The board doesn't vote until the end of March.

Unbelievable. There are so many Black parents who have raised concerns about the regional program so painting opposition as being White-led is not factual.

Just look at the Kennedy session where many Black parents stood up and expressed their concerns.

I was wondering what they were going to say. I'd love to hear more about how this model will advance equity (not equality) because nobody has explained this.

I'm not familiar with this group. Are they known to be Central Office-aligned, or have they historically been willing to criticize them and hence this is likely a genuine expression of their community's perspectives?

It seems like they are describing what they as individuals believe. A lot of criticism of the MCCPTA and MCEA for being White-led and assumption that the critics want to kill the model and not delay it. I strongly disagree with that assumption, but I get that there is a justified lack of trust.

Byron Johns is heavily involved in the NAACP. I’m surprised they’d support it given it’s going to hurt the kids they are advocating for the most.
