All 4s in a subject but 3 in effort?

OP here. Teacher said she gives 3s to everyone for effort first quarter since she wants them to learn how to better review etc and mentioned that next quarter my child would likely get all 4s. Interesting.

This whole grading system is not very informative or helpful. Like this explanation doesn’t really make sense. Grading based on the idea of some averaged future instead of a particular child at a particular time point.

Oh, one of those.
You will have other teachers like this. Don't worry about it.

I am so glad we never had a teacher like that.

No need to take the report cards too seriously at this stage, especially in the first quarter where the teacher is still trying to get to know all the students. My kid got 2's in math and music a few years ago, but I know he was very advanced in those areas, so I just shrugged it off.

My kid got straight 3s in every citizenship area and in every effort area and when we asked we got a similar response. Unless there were red flags and the kid was getting a 1, everyone else was getting 3s and no feedback.

Sounds like my 2E kid. They couldn't give him bad grades in elementary school because he was objectively testing a couple of years above grade level and placed in AAP; however, he was easily distracted and didn't complete his assignments unless he found them interesting. It was fine until middle school, but now the school is really trying to prepare them for high school and hold them accountable, and my kid is struggling. We're using outside help, such as a tutor and an executive skills coach.

Additionally, it's pretty common among gifted children to be 2e, so there may be a learning issue you're not aware of that may not be apparent at this young age.

By it was fine, I am assuming you means his grades. Did you do anything about his citizenship scores or did you just ignore the issue and now the problem is apparent to you?

They include the citizenship scores in ES so that parents are aware of kids behavior at school early on. Parents should be talking to the teacher if their kid has citizenship scores of 1 or 2. They should be working with the teacher to help the kid improve their behavior with consequences at home.

I swear they do that to pump up their own evaluations. “Oh I got my students to make more effort and try harder and be more engaged throughout the year!” It’s just a big game with nothing but fuzzy, subjective “data” aka “feelings” and cooking the books.

Our teacher told us she gave 3s n citizenship and effort to the kids who didn't cause any problems so they can show improvement.

One quarter my sports obsessed, loves to run, super competitive kid got a 2 in PE effort. We still laugh about that 5 years later.

The grades are meaningless in elementary school.

These are the effort grade guidelines from FCPS. It’s easy to see how a kid could get lower OR higher effort scores than the achievement scores. If they tracked perfectly, there would be no point in a separate effort score. (Yes, some teachers just put whatever.)

Effort Mark Guidelines

The following should be considered when determining a grade for effort:

Participation: class discussions, group work, partner activities, attention and focus during activities, appropriate responses to student/teacher interactions, homework completion

Quality of work produced: neatness, attention to detail, completeness, grammar and spelling

Perseverance: task initiation, task follow-through, consistency, academic endurance

Receptivity to feedback: appropriate response to suggestions or redirection, positive interactions during student-teacher conferencing, implementation of peer/teacher suggestions

This does not make any sense, very strange way of doing things.

In other words though, don’t worry about elementary school grades.
