I thought they might have been crop dusting a vaporized form of the virus from the planes… |

Why do we think the infected people have such severe reactions to Carol's anger? I feel that the answer to this will be linked to why Carol and the others are immune to the infection.
I think this part of the story is fascinating. As someone who feels things very deeply, nothing would be more frustrating to me than the idea that I had to control my emotions to avoid murdering other people. Carol is grieving and terrified and seems to be responding in a totally understandable, if not very productive, way. But when she expresses her feelings, she risks killing people. That would be so stressful! |
But all the people in the bar were infected even though they weren't outside when the planes went over. Same with everyone at the hospital. It's really confusing how the mass infection happened. I do think they'll explain it though. |

In the bar, I noticed two things: the tv had a story playing that said an airforce base was on lockdown. When Carol and Helen left the bar, only Carol covered her drink. They made a point to show that. When she returned, both drinks were covered. I may be wrong but that’s what I remember.
Also, the why of it all. A compliant planet will surrender easily to an alien invasion, especially if, as they say, they cannot kill. The “recipe” came from space for a reason. |

I've only watched the first episode but had some questions:
- why did her partner die? - why did it take the original scientist almost no time to come out of her seizure and start acting "normal" again, but it seemed to take hours for everyone else to? |
+1 And where were all the infected petri dishes taken? I guess we're to assume they were distributed throughout all of Albuquerque, and that's how everyone else was infected? |
They sort of answer this in the second episode. |
Entire Reddit thread discussing the napkin if you are inclined-some say it’s a clue but they don’t know what for and others say both glasses had napkins and give timestamp support. I wonder if was mostly women viewers that noticed napkins as more focused on you don't walk away from your drink! https://www.reddit.com/r/pluribustv/comments/1ortz52/the_napkins/ |
DP. I am in the "both glasses had napkins" camp, but I also think in the end don't think it has anything to do with how people were infected. The women don't go back in the bar and don't have any more of the drinks. So it's irrelevant that they put napkins on the drinks. I think it's just meant as a little ironic touch. Like here are these women taking a little extra step to avoid getting roofied at a bar, but then the entire planet is infected with a virus that kills Carol's partner and turns almost everyone else into pod people. It's just a little twisted sense of humor. Like when Carol wants to drive her partner to the hospital but then can't use her own car because of the breathalyzer. It's funny and tragic and at the same time. |
It didn’t take hours. It took maybe 15-30 minutes for people to come out of it and that’s about the amount of time that could be inferred for the scientist too. We didn’t see the whole period with the scientist - she was seizing in the air lock and then we cut away and see her later. |
So the virus infects rats too? All animals? Are humans connected to everything? |
| I just did not find it interesting. The main character is not likable. And it reminds me of Last Man on Earth. |
| Ir was the drinks at the bar, I’m assuming. But more importantly, when are they bringing carol’s partner back to life!? She’s a stellar actress and surely she will be a big piece of the series. Remember younger (she’s the hilariously uptight magazine boss)? Hedwig? She had a role singing heavy metal. |
To each their own, I guess. I found it riveting -- definitely one of the best shows I've seen in the last couple years. And I didn't really like Last Man on Earth. I like that it has a sense of humor, and I really like the way it's filmed -- it's cinematic they way they frame shots and how sequences are put together, like the montage of the "pirate lady" leaving Africa to fly to Albuquerque to see Carol. At the time we have no idea who this woman is or where she's going or why, but I found the sequence very compelling with all these clues. I will also admit that I love shows filmed in New Mexico and have been especially tickled by all the scenes of the Albuquerque airport, because I used to fly in and out of that airport multiple times a year to visit my mom and stepdad in Santa Fe. It's very distinctive, as is New Mexico generally, and the sense of place I get from seeing the big brown pleather Southwest style chairs in the airport waiting areas, or seeing certain mountain vistas in the background, is really rewarding. I totally get why Vince Gilligan keeps returning to NM to film his shows. It makes them feel different and special and *real* in a way other filming locations don't always, because there is just nothing like it. |
+1 DP. This was what I took from it too. Though, how on earth simply laying napkins over your drink could possibly prevent someone from roofing them is beyond me. I think it was more to signal to the bartender that they were stepping out but would be back. Or so they thought. |
